A Combination of Relaxed Elegance

“comfortable and livable” lifestyle

Visitors to the Greens of Marlboro are greeted by a classic and charming entry to their home. Katie and David Green believe in a “comfortable and livable” lifestyle for their family, and the white picket fence and row of white rocking chairs on the front porch add to that welcoming atmosphere.

Katie grew up in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, and David grew up right here in Marlboro. They were    introduced to each other by a good friend and former University of Delaware roommate of Katie’s. David didn’t have too much convincing to do to get Katie to agree that Marlboro would be a great place to raise a family. She is amazed and pleased at how many people “come back to Marlboro and choose to raise their families here.” Katie believes the school system is an excellent one and looks forward to their two young children becoming part of that system.

Katie and David’s search for a new family home led them to a new construction, 5,000-square-foot country colonial, on 1.5 acres in a recently developed neighborhood. Katie has met many young families who have moved in to raise their children and enjoy the beautiful country setting Marlboro has to offer.

The Green home continues to be a work in progress. They recently installed an in-ground pool, and look forward to enjoying those warm summer days poolside with friends and family. The last few years have been spent decorating the interior and making this home their own. Katie, in particular, has enjoyed the process, and finally feels she can sit back and enjoy the finished product.

The color palette chosen is warm and natural in tone, including, but not limited to, gold, sage, and burgundy. The downstairs half bath packs a lot of design punch into a small space, and features a hand-painted vanity with marble top and a unique three-dimensional stenciling technique that creates a sculptural plaster effect on the walls.

Katie was inspired to start decorating her new family home, but also realized that with two small children in tow, having patience would be a much-needed virtue. Working with a designer in the early stages of decorating set the tone for a warm, exceedingly livable approach to an elegant design concept. A variety of paint techniques have been utilized to create decorative interest throughout the Green home.

The formal dining room is designed to accommodate large family gatherings, and opens up into the living room to allow for even more space, if needed. The striped pattern and stenciling technique used on the walls mimics wallpaper, but was achieved with paint alone. Each accent piece in the dining room tells a story and illustrates the importance of family in the Greens’ life. The inlaid wood tea caddy is a family heirloom, and the still life in oils belonged to Katie’s grandmother. The leather-top, pint-sized chair was purchased by Katie’s mother at an auction, and was originally designed to support enthusiastic participants in cock-fighting matches. Katie says it is quite the conversation piece, but was quick to add that the only fowl entering her home ends up on the table with a side of mashed potatoes.

The family room is all about comfort and a laid-back, casual ambiance in which to unwind. “Timber,” the family dog, seems to be right at home snuggled up to the family sectional. The vaulted ceiling, recessed lighting, and skylights along with the wall of windows, with fan center detail, really let the sunshine in.

The Greens’ 5-year-old son enjoys his bedroom’s fanciful surroundings. The sun is always shining in this growing boy’s room, and was designed and painted by a childhood friend of David’s. The tree “growing” up the corner of the room is a focal point, but there are plenty of other details to enjoy,  including suspended planes and clouds, plus bear pilots flying around before landing on the bed for a bit of honey under a tree.
