An International Flair - Govil

A creative approach to interior design in the Govil home

Ann Govil was born in Guyana, a country located in the northern part of South America, bordering Brazil and Venezuela. Her great grandparents were  brought there as indentured laborers, from their native India, by the British who ruled over the country from 1803 until 1966 when Guyana finally gained its  independence.

Ann’s father came to the United States when she was still a child to work for designer Oleg Cassini in the manufacturing division of the company. Language  was not a problem since Guyana is still the only English-speaking country in South America. Her father was on a work visa that had a time restriction, but  with the help of the Cassini Company he was able to immigrate permanently with his family to New York, and settled in the Bronx.

Ann has four sisters and attended Baruch College where she received a degree in accounting. She met her husband Amit while in college and worked for  Macy’s International for their trends product development division for a number of years until her third child was born. The Govil family lived in Carteret  for a short time and then in Old Bridge for twelve years, owning homes in each town. The family grew during that time to include Akash, now 20, Arya, 18  and Ashna, 14.

The Govil family had relatives that had moved to Marlboro in the early 80s, so when it came time to look for a bigger home to build, Marlboro became the  town of choice. The family found a beautiful custom built development with unique topographical characteristics such as wooded and open space as well as  a dramatic grade to the land which allowed for stunning views. The Govil’s home was completed in 2002 after a two year construction period. The 7,200  square foot home, including six bedrooms and eight and one half baths, sits on 2.86 acres of beautifully landscaped property. The Govils cannot say enough  good things about the neighborhood’s cultural diversity and the quality of the Marlboro Public School System, which they have all been so much a part of  for nearly a decade.

Upon completion the Govil family home was a blank slate and Ann took on the role of interior decorator with enthusiasm. Ann has a well developed sense  of style and considers her design approach to be transitional, including traditional and contemporary elements. The finished product, including recently  installed decorative moldings, a unified color scheme and fully furnished interior, is a family friendly home that all who enter can feel very much at home in.

Dazzling landscape design and meticulous maintenance have created a wonderfully architectural landscape design that serves as a decorative frame for the Govil family home. The pool and surrounding patio design required a multi-tier plan and an enormous amount of stone to reinforce the engineering needs of  this elegant built in pool. The design and execution wer e completed and help create a spa like retreat for family and friends to enjoy throughout the warmer months of the year.

Ann likes symmetry in her design approach and the intricate design of her family home allowed for a variety of design approaches to be employed. She felt  color could be and should be a unifying force in the homes overall design plan. A rule of three was adhered to when it came to color and variations on those  colors.A palette of mustard seed, green and burgundy have created a regal and rich color scheme. Decorative moldings and ornamentation have been finished  with golden accents to give them additional visual appeal.

The Govil foyer is regal and features a spectacular crystal chandelier from Zaksons. The traditional flavors of India and ethnically diverse pallet of the Govil  family can all be satisfied by Ann’s prowess in the kitchen. She did not want a grand or oversized kitchen to be part of the plan since, for her, cooking has an  intimacy and needs to be shared by family and friends. There is still plenty of space in this well designed kitchen to share in the food preparation or talk around the granite topped center island.

The Govil’s mastersuite is elegant and plush with a regal color scheme of rich burgundy and sparkling gold tones. The furnishings have a neo-classical  formality, but the overall accent is on comfort. The master bath includes Travertine marble tile on the floor with diamond shaped contrasting accent tiles  placed for visual impact. The over sized jetted soaking tub provides a perfect opportunity to unwind after a hectic day.

The Govil’s two daughters Arya and Ashna, live creatively inspired lives
that include an appreciation of dance, music, film and theater. Their
rooms reflect their youthful exuberance, playful natures and love of
color. The iron beds and painted furniture add a lightness to the rooms
and allows the color of  the walls and mural work to take center stage.

The Govil family is passionate about film and the multi-tiered movie theater is truly a gathering place for friends and family to take in a private screening or  two without ever leaving the comforts of home. The oversized and comfortable, curved leather theater seats were custom ordered to follow the unique curve  of the seating area. The well positioned screening room, right off the kitchen, is perfect when a mid-film snack or craving overtakes the audience.
