In celebration of Woman’s History Month, Women in Media-Newark is hosting their first film festival. Three films will be presented, two by local filmmakers and one that looks at the international woman’s movement. The films, semiautobiographical, are The End of Winter, by Nefertite Nguvu, The Ultimate Betrayal: A Survivor’s Journey and Pray the Devil Back to Hell, which chronicles the struggle of women bringing peace to war torn Liberia. A Q&A with the filmmakers after the first two films and a panel discussion, with women including refugees from war torn African nations, will follow Pray the Devil Bank to Hell. Free and open to the public though donations are welcomed.

The Provost Film Series focuses on the turbulent lives and changing identity of Russians in Moscow in the past four decades. The film, Vanished Empire depicts how love and youthful idealism are both put to the test as the Soviet Union begins to crumble in this post-Soviet drama from director Karen Shakhnazarov, which nostalgically looks back on coming of age in a more stable and simple time. The 40th Annual Monmouth Festival of the Arts, the region’s largest juried art show, displays a wide variety of paintings, crafts and jewelry. Arts Festival activities include artist demonstrations, children’s programs, and an evening series of art lectures. The festival week begins with the elegant Gala Reception. Gala goers can meet and converse with the artists displaying in the show. Gala ticket holders also qualify as patron supporters of the festival allowing them to attend the show and its special programs during the duration of the festival. During the week, area art lovers can attend workshops by artists and the evening artists’ lecture series. Sunday April 18 is Family Day featuring children’s craft workshops and entertainment.
