What aspect of your profession most inspired you to take this direction?
As the child of a radiation oncologist and an emergency room nurse, I grew up with an understanding of both the science and art of medicine. As a wife, and mother of four teenagers, I have a unique connection with my patients that I believe only a woman and mother can offer. The field of plastic surgery has its early roots in reconstructive surgery, including the management of trauma, cancer, burns, breast reconstruction, and major birth defects. This surgical subspecialty requires a long and vigorous training in all areas of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. In an era where physicians are struggling with falling reimbursements and managed care, we have seen a flood of new “cosmetic” and “aesthetic” doctors across New Jersey. Many of these practices have little or no training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. I want patients to be informed and always choose their physician responsibly.
What might a patient feel stands out about your practice that would make them recommend you to family and friends?
Honesty, warmth, and experience are the foundations of my practice. From their first consultation, patients notice the warm, friendly atmosphere of my office. I don’t run my practice like a plastic surgery factory. I am a firm believer that an educated patient will make better and safer decisions, and I personally spend a great deal of time with every patient. Consultations should be educational, pleasant, and done without the pressure to schedule any procedure. Neither the staff, nor myself will ever sell you an operation or product that you don’t need. I would rather see you leave the office well informed, without an operation, than undergo an unnecessary procedure.
How do you stay current with the new advances in your field?
I was fortunate to be one of a handful of surgeons in the United States to be sent to Sweden to receive extensive training using the newest Form Stable Cohesive Gel Implants, and am the only plastic surgeon in New Jersey who has had access to these breast implants since 2005. As one of only ten plastic surgeons in the U.S. and Canada presently on the Executive Council for Allergan, a leading innovator in breast aesthetics and research, I have been lecturing throughout the United States. I have also written extensively on the subject of breast augmentation and breast implant revision surgery, including information on the management of breast implant complications; I am currently writing about patient education in breast augmentation.
