Company Overview:

Mike & Nellie’s is a steakhouse serving prime steaks, fresh seafood and Italian specialties. The Farber family has owned and operated Mike & Nellie’s, now known as M & N Steakhouse, for the past 15 years. Mike Farber, Executive Chef, under the guidance of the world-renowned Chef Gordon Ramsay, has changed the once Italian eatery into a top- rated Steakhouse. With its family atmosphere and newly renovated interior, M & N Steakhouse truly provides a fine dining experience.

Tell us about your chef? What is his background?

Chef Mike Farber entered the restaurant business while taking a temporary summer position at Tep’s in Rahway, owned by his father and grandfather. He came to the realization that the culinary industry was in his blood, and stayed, taking over the restaurant. During his tenure, he turned the “local pizzeria” into a three star rated restaurant, as noted in The Star Ledger. When Farber was ready to break out on his own as a chef, he left Tep’s to apprentice under the auspices of the Tribeca Grille and FilliPonte’s, both in New York City. With knowledge and know-how, he searched for a location in which to settle. A deal was sealed to open the then Mike & Nellie’s here in Monmouth County on a Monday morning in April 1996, and he was in the kitchen that night.

What makes your company stand out among others like yours?

The family environment that can only be found in private restaurants, not chains. We also prepare all of our food to order, no food is frozen or pre-made. All of our desserts are home-made by the sous-chef, Mike’s cousin Daniel. And, our menu was completely revamped and updated in July 2011, with the expertise and assistance of Chef Gordon Ramsay.

What kind of customer service philosophy do you have and would like to share with our readers?

Chef Mike will go to great lengths to purchase products of the highest quality and standards. An example of this would be serving only true, USDA Prime meats, a rare find in Monmouth County. Even when the market price is at its highest, Farber will settle for nothing less. At M & N Steakhouse, we aim to please each customer who dines with us. Although our menu has been updated, we continue to serve the signature dishes our customers love and return for.

Are there any specials you post on Facebook, Twitter or on your site?

Yes, we update our Facebook to reflect new specials that are posted to our website, www.mikeandnellies.com, or www.steaksnj.com.

Are there any signature dishes you would like to share with our readers?

Our signature dishes here are our steaks. As steakhouses go, there is only a handful in central to South Jersey that serve true USDA grade prime beef. We are proud to be one of them, and then you would have to travel to the Atlantic City casinos to find this quality of beef. Certified Angus some restaurants brag about is still choice grade and pales in comparison.

Are you a BYOB or do you have a bar?

We are a BYOB restaurant.

Do our readers need to make reservations?

Reservations are recommended on the weekends. Please call 732-531-7251.
