Dr. Marshall Allegra has been in continuous private practice in Monmouth County since 1988. He has a private practice in Hazlet and has affiliations with Riverview Medical Center, Bayshore Community Hospital, Shrewsbury Surgical Center, and Metropolitan Surgical Institute. Dr. Allegra is one of the few doctors who perform Hip Arthroscopy, a less invasive procedure than hip replacement. His practice specializes in performing them as a same day outpatient procedure, and as a result patients experience a faster recovery than with traditional open surgery. Dr. Allegra also performs partial and complete hip and knee replacement surgery, utilizing a minimal incision approach, in addition to knee and shoulder arthroscopy.
What might a patient feel stands out about your facility that would make them recommend you to family or friends?
Patients in my practice are treated exclusively by me from the initial visit, through surgery (if needed) and until discharge. The doctor/patient relationship is thereby strengthened because only one physician is involved in patient care. Many patients have indicated their displeasure with group practices in which a different physician is seen with each visit. As a second generation orthopedic surgeon, (my father, E. C. Allegra M.D., practiced in Monmouth County from 1957 through the mid-1990s) I have an intimate knowledge of the relationships patients develop with medical practices. We treat each patient as an individual, devoting the time necessary for diagnosis and then treatment of their orthopedic problems. Much of my practice comes from referrals by patients’ family and friends. Flexibility as regards surgical care is something our patients appreciate, as I am affiliated with Riverview Medical Center, Bayshore Community Hospital, the Shrewsbury Surgical Center, and the Metropolitan Surgical Institute.
How has your profession changed over the last decade?
The trend over the past decade has been towards minimally invasive surgery, with less hospital utilization and more same-day discharges, supplemented by advances in anesthesia for post-operative pain relief. Hip and knee replacements utilize minimal incisions, and partial joint replacements can be performed in same-day surgical settings. Newer techniques and materials have expanded the use of joint replacement to younger, more active patients. The trend toward less hospital time with faster recovery is growing.
How do you stay current with new advances in your field?
The last five years have shown an increase in younger, more active patients requiring joint reconstruction. Much of this has been in the form of partial joint replacements with discharge home on the same day of surgery. Evolving techniques incorporate arthroscopic surgery with partial joint replacement in the knee in order to decrease post surgical pain and to speed recovery. Patients in their 40s and 50s who were previously poor candidates for joint reconstruction can now undergo targeted procedures to expand the pain free function of arthritic joints. Most of my practice is devoted to arthroscopic surgery of the hip, knee, shoulder, ankle and wrist, along with hip, knee and shoulder joint replacement. Traumatic injuries are also treated. Hand and foot surgeries are performed, too.
