Company overview:

Remsen Dodge has been providing Dodge car, truck, and van service to customers since 1979. Remsen operates out of the very same building where his grandfather sold and serviced automobiles. In the mid 1950’s, the Straub family purchased the  former Club 35 Lounge and Bowling Alley, and converted it to sell and service cars and trucks. Over the years the Straubs have sold many different brands, and in 1981 they devoted the location solely to the Dodge brand. Though many automobile  companies have pushed their retailers to expand their facilities, Remsen Dodge has held back from doing so. Remsen Straub, the dealership principal, says that he sees every customer that comes in for sales or service, offering a “small town,  hardware-store feel.”

What was your motivation for getting in the business?

My dad used to bring me to the dealership on Saturdays, when I was only 6 or 7 years old. He would let me wipe down the sides of the cars on the showroom floor, empty trash cans, and clean the ash trays on the sales desks. As I got older I would  sneak into the shop and other areas of the operation. Eventually, like my older brothers, I worked every job – the wash, the service deck, under the hood, the parts room, office work, bookkeeping, sales…you name it. By the time I graduated Christian  Brothers Academy I was hooked on the car business.

What sets your business apart from others in the industry?

I think my customers like the “down to earth” atmosphere and the personal touch. I look at every transaction, every vehicle sale, every oil change…everything. One of my philosophies that sets us apart is our inventory. My grandfather told me years  ago that a big selection is its own form of advertising. The bottom line is…stock your lot full and people will advertise for you. It’s not uncommon for us to get out-of-state customers who tell us, “I heard you guys have over 100 trucks to choose from!”

What would your customers say to refer someone to your business?

One never knows, but this much I do know. Remsen Dodge spends about half the national average for car dealership advertising, yet we exceed our factory objectives year after year. This tells me that customers do share a good experience.

Which industry leader would you like to meet?

I actually met Roger Penske. He’s an auto racing team owner and truck leasing giant who is also an automobile dealer. Based out of Detroit, Penske Automotive is the second largest dealership group in the world, with more than 250 stores. Mr. Penske  also sits on the board for General Electric. I have always admired his accomplishments in the industry. When I ran into him last December in New York City I introduced myself, and the first thing he said was, “I know where your dealership is…excellent  location. I also know your family’s other dealerships…great reputation.”
