Overview of our services:

TCLA Enrichment Center was founded by Virginia McDonald, a teacher of gifted and talented students. She wanted to create a center where curriculum and instruction are aligned with research and current practices, sensitive to the cognitive and  emotional needs of children. Ms. McDonald and her staff of exceptional teachers, instruct small groups of students in a variety of content areas that focus on critical thinking. Development of these reasoning skills in content areas helps students think independently and maximize their potential.

What was the motivating factor for the launch of the enrichment program for gifted students?

The enrichment program for gifted students was initiated to fill a need to accommodate students who are most often our neglected population. It seems that the most capable students are viewed as those who require the least attention rather than  individuals who need appropriately challenging material and activities. Programs that do recognize this need have been in place in Princeton and Montclair, but courses for these students are long overdue in Marlboro and the surrounding  communities. This area has a large number of gifted students who deserve programs designed especially for them.

What sets TCLA apart from your competitors?

TCLA is distinct from its competitors in the level of experience and expertise of the educators involved. I personally have more than 25 years of practical experience in the education of gifted students. Moreover, I have continually kept informed about  theoretical and philosophical developments in the field. Our instructors, likewise, share knowledge and passion for providing appropriately meaningful programs for this special population of students. Our commitment to them is manifest in our personal  enthusiasm for our programs.

What might parents feel stands out about your program that would compel them to recommend you to other families?

The most compelling reason would be the degree of personal attention we devote to each student. The TCLA staff truly knows the children they serve, both academically and in terms of personal, individual needs. Families who avail themselves of the  opportunities we offer really do become part of a larger family of devoted educators. The connections formed between students, teachers, and parents at our school typically last long after our students move on.

Is there anyone you’d like to meet whose history or actions have affected your professional life?

As a woman who takes great pride in working to improve the lives of others, I think Oprah Winfrey has been influential in my recent life and is someone whom I would like to meet in the near future. I think the work she does is both touching on a  personal level and transformative in a global way. She proves that one person can affect many lives in both small and grand ways.
