Day Tripper - Overnight Adventures
08/30/2011 - By Christine Burke Eskwitt
Day & Night Tripper
Philadelphia Zoo, Battleship NJ, and Ripley’s Believe It or NotHmm, what else would you pack to spend the night cuddled up at an after-hours critter campout at a zoo in Philadelphia, bunked on a battleship in Camden, or overnighting at an “odditorium” in NYC?
A “Night at the Museum” is the new hot-ticket for kids and families looking for a fun and memorable family or group experience. Some can also earn kids Scout badges or provide educational experiences for school clubs, home school and youth groups.
Across the country, packs of kids and their grown-ups have been scooping up tickets and heading off to their favorite museums, zoos, aquariums and historic sites for sleepovers. With movies like Night at the Museum (2006) and then Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009) giving kids an idea that museums and the like might be even more fun after the lights go out, sleepovers have become a popular family outing, a great way to get kids running – instead of kicking and screaming – to cultural institutions, plus a super new revenue source for the institutions.
Here, a round-up of overnights easily reachable from the heart of Monmouth County. Visit the web site or call for pricing, age appropriateness and reservation information.
Roars and Snores Overnight at the Philadelphia Zoo
All Zoo overnights include an evening snack, continental breakfast, and admission to the Zoo the next day. One adult chaperone is required for every five children.
Several overnights are available, including:
Night Flight – Grab your sleeping bag and spend the night inside the Zoo’s historic Treehouse building. Meet a zookeeper and receive the Zoo’s Night Flight patch.
Scout Badge – Sleep in one of the Zoo’s cool classrooms and enjoy an evening filled with fun activities to meet badge requirements. Receive a Zoo patch, too! Badges/themes for Girl Scouts and Cub Scoutsinclude Eco-Explorer, Earth Connection, Wildlife, Plants and Animals, Naturalist, Sharing Your World With Wildlife and more.
Themed Overnights – Great for birthday parties! Choose from Critters of the Night, Frog Frenzy and Planet Protectors.
Family Overnights – Families can join in the fun of Night Flight and camp outside (summer only!) on the Zoo’s Impala Lawn.
Overnight Adventures for Youth Groups and Teens Education and fun come together at the Philly Zoo in a unique behind-the-scenes experience. Overnights can supplement what your group is already doing at home or school, or can introduce groups to conservation concepts and activities that you can start doing right away. Choose from the Zoo’s themed programs like Critters of the Night or Planet Protectors or contact the Zoo and they’ll put together something just for you.
Live Like A Sailor on the Battleship New Jersey
Spend a night aboard the legendary Battleship New Jersey, a floating museum on the Camden waterfront across from Center City in Philadelphia. Walk up the gangway and be amazed by the battleship’s size - nearly three football fields long and eleven stories high. This Iowa-class battleship was built to “keep floating and keep fighting,” with nine 16-inch guns that once reached land targets twenty-three miles away.
An “overnight encampment” includes entry to the gun turrets, a visit to the Combat Engagement Center, and participation in a simulated launch of a Tomahawk missile. Tour the Captain’s and Admiral’s cabins and the Officer’s Wardroom while climbing up and down the ship’s original ladders and companionways.
Merit badge program available for Boy Scout troops. Girls Night Only adventures include a USO-style performance and a presentation by a female Navy veteran.
The Battleship New Jersey is our country’s most decorated battleship. Guests will learn about its role in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf.
The Battleship New Jersey’s overnight encampment program can accommodate groups and families of all sizes, up to 300! Come aboard and stow your gear in the same lockers that held sailor’s personal belongings while at sea, sleep in bunks, and chow down in the crew’s mess. Adult Encampments too!
VFW, military reunion and other groups, why just visit the Battleship New Jersey when you can spend the night? Relive life aboard our nation’s largest battleship. Menu upgrades, team-building programs, entertainment and more can be arranged for your group.
