The Kairys create a world of their own – with the accent on family
Jo Ann and Steven Kairys have been married for a blissful 43 years - but who’s counting when you’re having this much fun? Their lives together began in college at Temple University in Philadelphia. They both grew up in the suburbs of the City of Brotherly Love, but met while enrolled in Temple University’s pre-med program.
They graduated in 1964 and Jo Ann began teaching in a South Philadelphia high school while Steven went on to medical school at Temple, graduating in 1968. They had their first son, Daniel, about this time and moved to Chicago for Steven to begin his internship. A move to Montana to serve in the Indian Medical Service on a reservation followed, and during the Kairys’ five year stay in Montana they adopted a beautiful 21 month old Native American daughter named Carole.
The family was making a visit back to the east coast to visit friends and family when they found themselves touring Hanover, New Hampshire, home of Dartmouth College. A visit to the college and a subsequent job opportunity led to a 22-year stay in this Ivy League town. Jo Ann became a member of the faculty, and Steven specialized in pediatric medicine while also serving on the faculty.
During the early to mid 1990s, the Kairys traveled extensively on grants to Eastern European countries to share their medical knowledge and visit pediatric hospitals as part of a federally- funded outreach program. Steven and Jo Ann visited Siberia and Moscow as part of their itinerary and later on decided to add to their multicultural family by adopting two Russian teenage girls named Kristina and Alona.
Jo Ann believes strongly in the “timing is everything” principle. With this in mind, Steven accepted a position at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and moved to Princeton, New Jersey. They were living in a town house and found that their newly expanded family, with the addition of Alona and Kristina, necessitated a bigger home. As luck would have it, or maybe just some great "timing," the Kairys were introduced to a house in Holmdel that had not even been listed yet, but needed to be sold quickly. The family was thrilled to hear that many of the furnishings were also available for sale and they moved into an almost fully furnished home, bringing with them their collection of art, family photos and a Steinway grand piano. After moving into their newly purchased, classically-inspired brick colonial, over the years the Kairys have renovated some sections of their home and done quite a bit of landscaping work.
Steven now serves as Chairman of Pediatrics at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune. The Kairys have had a wonderful experience with the Holmdel school system, and Jo Ann has started writing children’s books, the first of which is called “Princess Secrets." The entire family cannot be happier to call Holmdel their hometown.
The entrance to the Kairys home is grand and elegant, with bold, rich blue patterned wallpaper serving as a wonderful backdrop to a sweeping do uble staircase. JoAnn and Steven believe in creating a comfortable and family friendly environment in their home.
The warm wall color in the family room, along with a centrally located hearth flanked by Palladian windows that allow in natural light, creates a warm environment to have a chat or entertain friends and family. The Kairys have quite an eclectic collection of art created by a variety of artists, from Russia to Israel, and enjoy displaying it throughout their home.
The formal dining room has plenty of seating available for large gatherings.
As in homes with large families the kitchen is often a place to gather and catch up. There is seating at the granite-surfaced center island, and a large eat-in area with a table is used for less formal dining. The gourmet kitchen has a full complement of professional appliances, including a Viking stove and a double panel Sub-Zero® refrigerator.
Steven enjoys reading for pleasure as well as work, and there is no place better to enjoy a bit of both than this private library. The large windows bring the outside in and the simple vertical drapes andwoodenblinds allowasmuchor as little light as individual taste dictates or requires. The built-in shelving and inviting furnishings (the comfy, leather covered chair, for example) make the library a perfect place for relaxing and catching a cat nap or two.
The master bedroom suite is spacious and comfortable in every way. The blue wall color is restful and the scrollwork bed with white bedcover contrasts nicely with the soft surroundings.
The master bath includes a sunken tub with marble surround and was renovated after the house was purchased.
