Homes: Classically Inspired - A family’s heritage and traditions guide a dramatic interior
The dramatic great room is bathed in sunlight. The handmade Indian rugs were the point of departure,

Fabrics play a large part in softening the grand space and add much-needed warmth. Agostino’s of Red Bank proved to be an invaluable source for furniture pieces, accessories, and fabrics. The marble and mosaic fireplace surround depicts a traditional Ind

The Nayyars’ Marlboro home is nearly 6,300 square feet…and growing. A spacious bedroom addition is underway, and the nearly two-plus acres are a landscaping work in progress. The traditionally inspired home took 1 year to build and decorating it has been a joyous family affair, with Sanjeev and Seema Nayyar sharing the decision-making challenges along the way. Both physicians – Sanjeev, a gastroenterologist, and Seema, an anesthesiologist – are parents of four: Neha, 13; Pooja, 7; Himani, 6; and Jatin, 4. Their home is a place for family, faith, and traditions, and serves as a gathering place in a most needed break from what can be a rather hectic schedule. Both born in India, Sanjeev and Seema have tried to instill a connection to their heritage in their children. Their family home reflects this connection and combines traditional elements with many religious and artistic works throughout the restful interior spaces. The family chose the site for their special home because of its elevation and light-filled location. The eat-in kitchen and family room continue to be the most used areas of their home. Seema’s mother-in-law, Sarla, can often be found preparing traditional vegetable, lentil, and chicken dishes in the spacious kitchen for all to enjoy. Sarla’s presence in their home, Seema says, helps to “teach her children to have a respect and connection to traditions” that might otherwise be challenged by a fast-paced American lifestyle. She is also thankful that her children have been exposed to their Hindi language, which is spoken in their native Punjab in northern India. The family is planning their first trip back to India in many years and Seema looks forward to sharing with her children the culture of their homeland. She also plans to keep her eyes open for special decorative items and artifacts for the family home to enjoy upon their return.
