GOLFER EXTRAORDINAIRE!
When I arrive for our 4 p.m. interview, Charles “Charlie” Edler is sound asleep on the couch even though we confirmed by text an hour earlier! But it’s no surprise; he had been up since 4 a.m. that morning in order to drive to a golf tournament several hours away, where he played a full eighteen holes before turning around and driving back home to Fair Haven! All this after having just returned the night before from Hilton Head, S.C. where he competed in a grueling three day tournament as one of only four high school golfers in a field of top college players.
Always an athlete growing up, Charlie enjoyed playing lacrosse, basketball and football. But for fun he would often play golf with his family, father Doug Edler (a portfolio manager), mother Andy and his two younger brothers, John (15) and Steve (10), at the Rumson Country Club where they are members. It was there while still in the eighth grade that he played in his first tournament, the Men's Club Championship, and shot an impressive 78- 80-158. Although he had been leaning towards team sports, especially lacrosse, Charlie opted to join the golf team his freshman year at Rumson-Fair Haven High School and began playing competitively. It was a good decision; that year Charlie won the Monmouth County Championship while holding down the No. 2 spot on the varsity team, taking over as No.1 his sophomore year and again his junior year. In just two years of competitive golf his handicap went down to zero and he averaged 36.5 for nine holes.
Now going into his senior year, Charlie has amassed some imposing records. He won the 75th NJSIAA/MGA Tournament of Champions, has played three years on the All Shore Team, won the International Junior Golf Tour Tournament of Champions in May and was elected Shore Conference Player of the Year in the Asbury Park Press. He won the High School State Championship last year and this week he will be competing in the U.S. Junior, which is the National Championships for junior golfers His handicap is now an impressive +2.9 and averages 35 on nine holes - and he only just turned 17 in June!
Leaving soon for a tournament in Fargo, N.D., Charlie has had the opportunity to play on courses all over the U.S. from Florida to Michigan. His favorite course is actually right here in New Jersey, however. “Last year for the US Junior I played at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, NJ; the condition it was in was incredible. There were no imperfections; it was pristine,” he marvels. His favorite club is his driver, a Titleist 909D2 and his favorite balls are Titleist Pro V1 which he marks with a black sharpie, “Rack‘em”.
With his wins stacking up behind him you can bet some of the better known golf colleges like Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech and Arizona State, or even the Ivy League schools like Yale and Princeton, are showing interest. “I am undecided on where I want to go to college. I’m probably one of the only guys I play against who doesn’t have a pretty good idea of where I am going,” Charlie admits. Hoping to go to a top academic school Charlie maintains excellent grades and although at this point he is mum on which college he prefers you can be sure they will have a superior golf program.
As good as he is, Charlie understands that the field is highly competitive and he needs to have a backup plan. “If I have the opportunity I would definitely do golf as a profession but there are actually very few people that make a good living playing golf. Maybe just 400 or so… there are also maybe a few hundred more than that that are club pros. But, there are a ton of junior golfers that come out every year that have really good games and are aspiring to be pros and then they just never make the jump to making the serious money. If that happens to me I guess I would like to be a portfolio manger like my dad,” Charlie says thoughtfully. Whatever Charlie ends up doing, his golf clubs will be waiting nearby.
