Kids On The Move - Eleanor Phipps
08/30/2011 - By Teja Anderson
ROWER ON THE RISE!
When Eleanor Phipps was ten years old she moved with her parents, Lucy and Simon, and younger brother Morgan, 6, from Oxford, England here to Colts Neck. It was supposed to be a two year job relocation stint for her father, who works for a large petrochemical company. Seven years later they are all still happily ensconced in the community and have become permanent residents. Eleanor, although maintaining her delightful British accent, has just graduated from Colts Neck High School and is heading off to Drexel University in Philadelphia to study Chemical Engineering. “I picked Drexel because not only do they have a great C.E. curriculum but they also they have this really great co-op program” enthuses Eleanor; “I go to work (paid) for six months at a time and then I go to school for another six months, and I do that three times over the course of the five year program.”
Eleanor also hopes to continue with her true passion: rowing.* She started four years ago at Navesink River Rowing (NRR) on Maple Avenue in Red Bank, a non-profit organization of rowing enthusiasts started in 1983 to teach and promote rowing to the public. NRR currently offers 22 single shells, 4 doubles, and 8 quads to its members as well as classes for all levels from ages 14 and above.
Starting as a complete novice Eleanor quickly worked her way up to the Youth Travel Team where she excels in quad racing and the occasional eights and doubles. During the winter months Eleanor continues with her training using an indoor rowing machine called an “erg.” “It’s brutal, but it’s good for training and really gets your power up and you can do races on it and then go on to indoor races,” she explains. Spring, summer and fall rowing can also be difficult due to weather conditions ranging from heat waves, cold fronts and heavy winds and thunder storms.
Eleanor is a big fan of Colts Neck High School which she feels properly prepared her for college. “My parents chose Colts Neck because it had one of the better school districts in New Jersey. That gave me a different perspective on it than people who have lived here their whole lives,” she explains. “All the teachers are really good, especially my Tech Design teacher, Mr. “Nemo” Niemierowski.”
Upon moving here from England she was surprised by all the driving instead of walking and the sheer size of things, from stores to schools. “In England, everything is very cramped; it was quite a shock changing schools because I had never had to move from classroom to classroom. I wasn’t prepared for that. I had always been in one room, with one teacher,” Eleanor recalls giggling. But she adjusted quickly after a few hectic class changes. Although Eleanor misses English chocolate and relatives over there, she believes that she will stay on this side of the pond, as they say, after completing her studies.
When she isn’t propelling herself across the Navesink River or grabbing a chocolate milk and a toasted whole wheat bagel at Manhattan Bagel just up the street from NRR, she can be found working at the Colts Neck Library. She's volunteered as a page there for the past five years and keeps busy shelving books. Although she loves hanging out with her girlfriends - who sometimes unwittingly mimic her accent - and amusing them by speaking “American,” she considers her “Mum,” Lucy, to be her best friend. Lucy is a glass artist and school photographer with Lifetouch. “She makes gorgeous bowls and plates that are really pretty colors of random patterns,” says Eleanor admiringly. “I’m going to miss her and her cooking when I go to Drexel.”
*Rowing is one of the oldest Olympic and collegiate sports and is sometimes referred to as “crew”.
