GET UR MSG ON :) !

Texties are t-shirts with texts. The company was founded in 2010 by siblings Michael Baratta, age 13, Ally Baratta, age 12, and their cousin Sally Carden, age 11.

The Texties line of t-shirts features the shorthand language and emoticons used in text messages, things like ‘BRB’ and a digital take on the classic smiley face. The feelings that the founders hope to convey are happy, positive messages mirroring the things they text to their friends. Their mission is simple – b :).

“It feels really cool because it’s a business we started,” says Sally Carden, from Monmouth Beach.

The idea sprang from a conversation Sally had with her cousins Ally and Michael, of Red Bank, during a car trip in 2010. They were talking about the scene from “Forrest Gump” when Tom Hanks’ character finds a yellow T-shirt and wipes his muddy face on it, inadvertently creating the iconic “Be Happy” logo that has lasted decades.

The young founders were inspired by the scene and the trio came up with the idea to press the digital smiley face onto a shirt. “We were thinking how people just invent stuff, and we’re always texting, so we thought, ‘Text tees,’” says  Sally.

“The concept is to print positive messages commonly sent via text between friends,” said Michelle Baratta, the mother  of Michael and Ally.

With the help of their parents, the threesome got the brand trademarked and are now officially open for business — in  digital fashion, of course. The young entrepreneurs have extended their idea into a full line of t-shirts that are available  for kids, women and men, plus babies and toddlers, at www.texties.net.

But the plan is to take it to the street one day, too. “With the money we make, we’ll make more shirts and eventually  open a store,” says Michael Baratta.

Co-founder Sally wants to “Save the Earth” and the group plans to launch a new line of organic Texties to stores like  Whole Foods and other eco friendly outlets. They are also working on an animal collection featuring cats and dogs, and  are planning to give one dollar per shirt sold to the SPCA. Other partnerships are in the works, like donating a  percentage of all sales of <3 Texties to the American Heart Association, says mom Michelle Baratta.
