TEEN ATHLETE AND BUSINESS MOGUL
When trying to describe Ryan Dolan one word comes to mind…Wow! This 16-year-old Colts Neck resident truly does it all. He is an athlete, a businessman, a motivated student, a humanitarian, and a philanthropist.
Ryan, who has lived in Colts Neck for 12 years, is going into his junior year at Red Bank Catholic (RBC) High School. He plays football, is very involved in the martial arts, already owns his own record business (Revolution Records), and, through special events, has raised money for charities. Ryan has a life-long passion and love of football. He started playing when he was around 6 or 7 years old, and this past year (as a sophomore) he was the running back for Red Bank Catholic’s Varsity football team. The team had a most impressive record of 9 and 0.
His other major athletic involvement is through Mixed Martial Arts. According to Ryan this is a combination sport and art form, mixing several different disciplines – from Jiu-Jitsu to Muay Thai to Taekwondo. Mixed Martial Arts incorporates these various methods together into a new style of fighting in one ring. Ryan has been studying and training under Ademir Oliveira who is a world champion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
This ambitious young man has also applied his dedication and drive to the business world. The summer he graduated from the 8th grade, he started up an independent hiphop record label. He networked it through MySpace®, produced albums, set up photo shoots, and worked on music videos for a couple of different artists. In fact, he orchestrated internet promotions for eight different artists, seven from the tri-state area and one from as far away as Australia. After doing this for a year he was approached by Starr Media Group and was asked by them to take over their promotion department. He is currently still working with them; so, at the tender age of 15 he was already experiencing the kind of success college graduates dream of!
So when does this young man get some sleep? He shared that he does have some long nights during the year. He generally comes home after football practice, does his homework, and then launches into work on his promo projects.
When he’s not busy with his regular routine, Ryan is involved in other school activities, like the Casey Ambassador program. This program is comprised of a chosen group of students who are designated as representatives of RBC High School. When students or parents show an interest in the school, this group is ready to provide tours of, and share information about, the school. They also help run the entrance exam for incoming freshmen, the “transferstudent breakfast,” and many other events. In some cases, they are sent to other schools’ events to represent Red Bank Catholic.
Ryan initiated a “Battle of the Bands” event to raise money for Sylvia’s Children, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children in Africa. He said that in December 2008 he “heard Sylvia speak and was very moved by her talk and the plight of the children there.” He contacted her and said he wanted to help, and came up with “Battle of the Bands” fundraiser idea. All the money raised went directly to the charity.
Ryan will also be extending his helping initiatives to the United States. He is slated to be spending spring break of his junior year in New Orleans in order to help rebuild homes in the still-devastated areas.
When asked about future aspirations Ryan replied that “he likes math a lot, but he is really not sure what he wants to study yet.” What he does know is that he wants to do something in business. Well, considering the amazing and admirable accomplishments he already has under his belt, whatever path he chooses will surely lead him to success!
