GIVING HIS ALL FOR THE TOWN
If you were to sit down with a 16-year-old young man as articulate, committed, driven, and “cool” as Spencer Krug, you couldn’t help but be impressed. This Marlboro High School senior seized an opportunity to give back to his town by being part of the newly established Teen Advisory Committee (TAC) that is overseen by Deputy Mayor Larry Rosen.
The TAC was formed about 2 years ago, and currently has about 400 members, 80 of whom attend meetings on a bi-monthly basis. When Krug began attending meetings his vision kept growing as far as doing things for the town. Whether it’s trying to help implement a teen taxi or trying to establish a teen center, he has shown his commitment and perseverance. This is now Spencer’s second year serving as one of five executives, and he says that the committee has proven to be successful. “We are just trying to make the town a better place through our initiatives.” According to Krug it is often his job to organize the meetings and come up with leadership principles for the group.
The TAC works closely with the Economic Development Committee. Spencer says they recently went to local businesses in Marlboro and offered them space on the town website to post job listings for teens. He adds, “I love politics and government, and I’m so happy to be part of this…when Mayor Hornik was elected he actually made TAC part of the Township. We weren’t just a bunch of teens; we are now a committee that is part of the town. We are required to attend town hall meetings and speak to the council.”
The National Honor Society student states that the committee has proven to be a success thus far. “All of the volunteering, the implementation of the Marlboro Teens Job Mart classifieds, book drives for Africa, and coat drives not only benefit the community but help to teach all of the teens involved values, too.” He says that several senior citizens have offered to “pay them” to express their gratitude, but they do not accept pay; they are doing this for the town and to give back. Spencer’s biggest goal is to get everything done that they have set out to accomplish. “I would love to have a teen taxi and have the teen center built before I am off to college.” He says he is more concerned for teens in the future than he is about himself. The TAC’s motto is “Doing Good,” and it is the phrase that Krug lives by.
Spencer has an internship researching legislation for Senator Jennifer Beck and Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande. He most recently suggested that Beck help establish a “Drowning Prevention Month” in New Jersey. Krug hopes that when the senator presents the idea to state legislators his idea will be voted in. Through the TAC he has also secured a job working for Self Improvement Inc., a Marlboro-based business. Krug also holds the post of Assemblyman with Marlboro High School’s Student Council. He says, “I actually started the TAC club at the school. I am involved in ADAPT (Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Prevention Team) and Athletes for a Better Community. I am an athlete, so my peers perceive me as being bigger than I am…and they see that I am so involved and give back.
As far as career goals, the history buff says he would like to one day be a lawyer and be involved in politics. He’s hoping he’ll be accepted to the University of Michigan, Delaware, or Maryland, but has even higher hopes of being accepted to Cornell or Georgetown this year. When Krug isn’t playing sports for the high school or trying to make Marlboro a better place to live, he likes to cruise around Facebook®, lift weights, and exercise. He adds, “I like to work. I love money.”
*Editor’s note: Krug plays soccer, baseball, football, and cross-country.
