People On The Move: C. Arthur Albrizio

C. Arthur Albrizio
C. Arthur Albrizio - At The Helm Of Holmdel High
Interim Principal C. Arthur Albrizio could not be more enthusiastic about Holmdel High School. As he himself has said, he is a cheerleader for the school, singing its praises. Simply put, he has found Holmdel High School to be a wonderful place.
When he accepted the position of interim principal, Mr. Albrizio had just recently retired as principal of Red Bank Regional High School. All in all, he has been an educator for over 31 years in a number of capacities, including guidance counselor, coach, and department supervisor.
Mr. Albrizio has been fortunate, as he really has loved his life in education. In reflecting back, he shared that some of the best times in his career were when he had been able to directly impact and interface with the students. He felt his most rewarding years were when he was in guidance and when he was involved in co-curricular activities as a coach. He has found that taking on the role of principal is challenging in that one becomes more of a manager; but this role has enabled him to have more of an effect on curriculum and instruction. Principals, he feels, can be visionaries and, if necessary, agents of change to respond to the needs of their students.
Mr. Albrizio has a Bachelor of Arts degree from what was, at the time of his graduation, Trenton State College (renamed and currently known as The College of New Jersey). He continued his studies by earning a Master’s degree from Seton Hall University, and has done additional graduate work at Kean University, Georgian Court University, and Monmouth University.
He became Interim Principal of Holmdel High School in September 2006, and is slated to finish his term there in June 2008. He shared that a search committee is being formed and will probably be in place by January 2008 to find the next permanent principal for the high school.
When he first arrived at the school, Mr. Albrizio was not sure what the environment of the school would be, as it had had a somewhat tumultuous history: for a while, there had been a pretty high turnover of principals at the school – he believed there were approximately five different principals in the past 8 or 9 years. Nevertheless, he was pleased to find that Holmdel High was a wonderful place. He finds the student body to be gracious, respectful, and academically driven, and is pleased with the support the parents and greater community network provide the school…not to mention his delight with the talent of the teachers in the building.
He says that there is a great school spirit that is palpable as you walk through the building, and he is impressed with the wide range of extracurricular activities, programs, and clubs offered to meet the diverse interests of the students. There are the athletic teams, performance clubs dedicated to the arts and drama, and special interest clubs like the Future Physicians Club, as well as clubs that focus on political issues. Mr. Albrizio finds the student body very aware of their world and very motivated.
Apparently, the statistics back up what Albrizio has found. According to the State Of New Jersey Report Card narrative, “Holmdel High School offers a challenging academic array of highly academic courses, all of which are aligned with New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. Students may choose from 16 Advanced Placement courses, including five world language options. Over 235 students were enrolled in A.P. courses in 2005–2006, and 91% of these students scored a 3 or higher on the national exams. Of last year’s senior class, 98% continued their education at institutions of higher learning.” In anyone’s book, that amounts to a resounding success!
The only negative that Mr. Albrizio could think of is that the physical size of the high school is being strained. When the school opened in 1970 it was designed to accommodate about 700 students; the population at the school today is approximately 1,100.
Reflecting on his brief tenure at Holmdel High School, Mr. Albrizio said, “This has been a totally rewarding experience.”
