Ayurveda, a holistic health care system that originated in India over 5,000 years ago, is  considered to be the mother of natural medicine. Now, this popular global practice of “green”  medicine has come to Monmouth County. The recently-opened Akasha, “A Space to Heal”  offers a multitude of therapies that cleanse your body through all-natural means. “Everything we put on your skin is not man-made, it’s made by nature,” Eleanora Trainor, Director of Akasha  says. “We anoint and nourish the body through various techniques. We all have imbalances in  our bodies that develop through our lifestyles, and at Akasha, we replenish the nourishment that  you are lacking.”

According to Ayurveda, the building blocks of life are composed of five elements: air, earth,  ether, fire, and water. Everyone has their own constitution that is comprised of those elements.  During their initial visit to Akasha, patients fill out an itemized list, or intake, about every aspect  of their lifestyle, which the therapists evaluate to determine what their constitution is. Ten days  later, they return and begin their six-week treatment program. “When they return, we have  discovered what has been contributing to their health or wellness issues, and then advise them  on what foods are appropriate for them, according to the Ayurveda,” Trainor says. It is also  recommended, but not required, for patients to visit Akasha once a week during this period to  receive soothing body therapies, or attend yoga or exercise classes.

“Ayurveda means the science of longevity. So we are not only helping people keep their body  balanced during their sessions, but we are teaching them how to maintain that balance to live a  longer, harmonious life so they can fulfill their potentials,” Trainor says. “And although Ayurveda  is globally recognized as a viable way to treat disease, we are not a replacement for modern medicine, but a complement of it.” Every therapist at Akasha has undergone rigorous training in  the art of Ayurveda, and has a vast understanding of its methods and capabilities that have  healing people for thousands of years. “We have integrity behind everything we do here,”  Trainor says.
