You don’t have to have talent to enjoy making art, according to Marlene Bohnyak, owner and lead instructor of Artisan  Studio in Marlboro. “Art is a very beneficial activity to engage in,” she explains, “and it’s a misconception that you need  any special talent or skill.” For children ages 4 to 18 as well as adults of all ages, creating art at any level or in any medium  can help people relax, de-stress, learn and enjoy. “All you need is the willingness and desire to try it,” observes Marlene.

Her enthusiasm about art is contagious. Shemajored in fashion illustration, but lost interest in fashion and became a portrait and mural painter. After moving to New Jersey in 1985, she began teaching private lessons, and in a nursery school and for Marlboro Township Recreation. She opened Artisan Studio eight years ago. Classes at Artisan are kept small and are  structured to nurture creativity and imagination. Students can choose from a wide range of mediums, from drawing and  painting to cartooning, mosaics, sculpting with clay, and including “crafty” arts like origami, fabric arts, papier mache, decoupage, and sewing! The Studio offers seasonal Art Camps throughout the year, and it’s a great place to plan a birthday  party, Scout activity, ladies night or fundraising event.

Marlene notes that artistic activity helps improve eye-hand coordination, dexterity, fine motor skills, and helps students  develop patience and an awareness of creativity as a process. She reports that practitioners who work with special needs  children often recommend classes at Artisan Studio to their patients. For any child, she says, “it’s a safe, non-competitive  place where they come to learn and enjoy.” Marlene is thrilled that many of her students continue at the studio for years,  followed by their younger siblings and sometimes the parents themselves. “I often have relationships with families for 10 to  15 years” she says with satisfaction and a smile.

Come to Artisan Studio to discover a new world of art experience. As Marlene Bohnyak maintains, “Art can have such a positive impact if you just give it a try.”
