If you’re looking for a new spa experience, Bear and Birch should be at the top of your list. Monmouth County’s first Russian banya opened this past March, and offers extraordinary spa methods in a Siberian ambiance. This bathhouse utilizes unique Russian techniques that date back to as early as 1113. Owner Peter Kizenko says he was inspired to open up the banya because he used to visit one in Russia on a weekly basis. Kizenko offers a piece of his home to New Jersey, as there are very few Russian bathhouses within the tri-state area, and most are located in New York. Kizenko felt the Garden State needed one of a more genuine and Russian feel.
Using authentic products shipped from Russia, The Bear and Birch spa is custom designed, containing steam rooms, as well as a “cold punch pool,” as Kizenko calls it. The process consists of entering a steam room to open one’s pores, followed by being whacked with branches, to increase circulation, and then finally taking a dip in the pool. Don’t be discouraged by being “whacked,” which is actually a soothing process meant to help you unwind. Kizenko admitted he gladly makes use of the banya every day. When someone once asked if he’d had Botox treatments, he responded with a laugh, “No, I use the steam room.” Kizenko explained that the banya is a detoxifying process that leaves you feeling relaxed enough to get a good night’s sleep, and refreshed and energized for the next day.
There are several therapies available, from The Scrub and Soap Massage with Vichy Shower to The Four Hand Vennick Soap and Scrub Deluxe. Eventually, Bear and Birch will offer manicure and pedicure treatments. The spa also features refreshments to savor while kicking back in a complimentary towel and slippers. So enjoy the Russian banya experience the next time you want to indulge yourself, at The Bear and Birch in Freehold.
