When Bonnie Gabizon couldn’t find a bakery where she could buy a nut free birthday cake for her allergic son, she did what most moms would do...bake her own. She never expected that it would turn into a thriving business creating special occasion cakes. Thus, Bonnie Cake began.
In just over 18 months, Bonnie Cake has caught on in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. All her recipes are nut free as is the facility where she does all her baking. She uses only real, high-quality ingredients to make delicious and delectable special occasion desserts for events up to 200 people, including birthdays, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, and weddings. Bonnie can create virtually any type of cake and makes sure her customers are an integral part of the process. “I will listen and discuss all their ideas on a one-on-one basis about what they want to create for their party, whether it be flavors or designs,” says Bonnie, who is credits her creativity for her amazing cakes. “Everyone is always pleasantly surprised at how exquisite the cakes look and taste.”
Bonnie worked as a third-grade teacher before spending the past ten years as a stay-at-home mom to her three children, who are now 11, 7, and 5. She was always a home baker but did not plan on turning it into her first business venture. “My kids are my biggest fans,” she says.
She also has many fans in the region. Word-of-mouth has enabled Bonnie to take on the task of making two or three cakes per week, with each one taking up to 20 hours, depending on the complexity. She recommends anyone interested in ordering a cake from her provide three to four weeks notice. Customers should make her aware of any special needs since she can also make gluten free or egg free desserts as well.
“My favorite part is the end product and the reaction from the recipients of the cake,” says Bonnie. “It’s a fun thing from start to finish. Bringing a customer’s vision to life and seeing the reaction is very rewarding. The cakes speak for themselves.”
And so do the customers, always with a “Mmmmmmmmmm, delicious.”
