Not many people are lucky enough to turn their favorite hobby or passion into a full-time career, but Ray Folio is lucky. Since 1976, he has been operating Folio Art Glass. The business originally began with stained glass windows and Tiffany reproductions, but has expanded to include painted, kiln-fired, and fused glass pieces (the most recent endeavor).
Unlike many pieces that are simply decorative, fused glass creations like dinner platters or candlesticks are functional and dishwasher safe. Ray runs the business, along with his wife Barbara, daughter Kim Folio-Dorland, and son-in-law Tim Dorland. They have gone from displaying their work at arts and crafts shows along the East Coast to running a store where customers can come in and watch the pieces being made. Tim brings a new perspective to the area of fused glass with his unique fused paintings and custom glass mosaics. He also teaches classes covering different aspects of glass.
Not only is attention to artistic detail important to the family, but so is a focus placed on their customers. All of Folio Art Gallery’s items come with artist cards describing the production process; they also provide a history of the family. Gift wrapping is included with any purchase.
“Our business is completely unique,” says Kim, who began working with her dad when she was 7, making her own sun catchers. “We make most of what we sell in our store, and because of that we can pretty easily customize our items to our customer’s needs.”
“Our customers can expect a friendly family to help them with all of their gift purchases and personal purchases. We go way past what they usually see in a retail store. We really care about them as people and get to know them. We usually know our customers’ names as they walk through the door,” says Kim.
With a great mix of products not to be found anywhere else, Folio Art Glass provides a special shopping experience. The company has operated for 30 years on a philosophy of being a family and not a factory.Whether you’re buying something for yourself or as a gift, you are sure to find a treasure as soon as you walk in the door.
