The mission of Neighborhood Lit. is simple: to provide a fun and interactive learning environment wherein kids are motivated to improve their reading and writing  skills, develop their strategic thinking, and become life-long lovers of reading. Under the guidance of owner Janice Migliazza, it is working.

Neighborhood Lit. uses one-of-a-kind reading and writing workshops that are focused on improving literacy skills at all levels. Whether your child is a terrific reader  who needs to be challenged or is one who needs a bit of extra attention, you can be assured that the research based instruction is designed to develop and  accelerate pre-reading, early, and advanced reading skills. Janice uses her experience as a reading specialist to create the programs, write the lessons, produce the  evaluations for all kids, and coach her staff of five teachers.

The fun, interactive workshop sessions use books, games, and educational manipulatives as motivational tools. This use of hands-on literacy-based activities encourages students to play, create, and imagine while reading and writing. The fun-filled studio is the ideal learning environment with three reading rooms and a  "Messy Room" for favorite activities like shaving cream spelling. With no more than six students in a workshop, each child gets individualized attention in the weekly 1-2 hour workshops, which are offered during the school year and summer months. Class schedules are convenient with morning, afternoon, and after school sessions  available.

At Neighborhood Lit. kids receive useful skill and strategy instruction and have the chance to practice and showcase what they learn through the use of fun games  and activities. Some of the game and activity choices include: Egg Hunt, Bucket Blast, Hoop Bean Bag Toss, Parachute, Pick-a-Card, Hangman, and many more.  Parents are involved in the learning process, too. Each week they get a newsletter explaining what is happening in class with suggestions of what to do at home.“

Any child can learn anything,” Janice says.“They are never at a point where they learn enough. There is always more they can do. It’s really great.”
