It’s one of those hot summer days where nothing seems to cool you down. Neither the pool, the air conditioning on high, nor a cold shower seems to work; you are still sweating and overheated. However, something sweet, icy and refreshing might do the trick!. It’s no secret then why Strollo’s Lighthouse and its Italian Ices are the taste of summer itself and definitely the taste of the Jersey Shore.
The business began in the 1930s when Tony Strollo made the family recipe in his garage before bringing it over to the beachfront in an old converted bus. Tony eventually passed the secret on to his son, Ray, who opened their first store in 1976. The high demand forced Ray to find a way to make more of his homemade Italian Ice without losing any of the great flavor. He recruited a friend in the soft-serve ice cream business and together they came up with the means to stay true to the recipe and satisfy their customers’ cravings. Ray then added orange, cherry, and chocolate to go along with the traditional lemon, and the Lighthouse soon became more popular than ever!
In 1987, Jimmy Callano and his cousin bought the Lighthouse store in Long Branch from their Uncle Ray. With demand growing swiftly, Jimmy went on to take sole ownership of that store, added more than a dozen flavors, and has since opened locations in West End, Red Bank and Point Pleasant Beach.
“Now that we are in our new beautiful, bigger location, our tradition of offering high-quality, fresh ingredients from a polite and friendly staff will continue,” says Jimmy, who built a 35-foot lighthouse as part of the new building. “We are very excited about the new location, which is just up the block from our old spot.”
Why is the Lighthouse so popular? It’s their insistence on using only the best ingredients, combined with old-world recipes and a special production process. This allows the Lighthouse to offer the finest Italian Ices available. And it’s no wonder that Lighthouse’s local fans are no longer able to keep these treats all to themselves. Word has spread far and wide, not just among summer visitors or residents of nearby states, but across the country as well. The Lighthouse was featured on FoodNation with Bobby Flay on the Food Network during Chef Flay’s trip to the Jersey Shore.
However, customers need not worry. Even as the crowds get bigger, there will always be plenty of Lighthouse’s Italian Ice for everyone. They will just keep making more!
