If you don't know the grand wines of this Southern Rhone town, you will want to. Chateauneuf de Papes translates into English as New House of the Popes. In 1308 Pope Clement V relocated the Papacy to Avignon, and the Avignon Popes were great lovers of wine. They greatly promoted the development of the local wines and they soon came to be known as Vin du Pape. This transformed into the current Chateauneuf de Papes.
