People On The Move - Adam Lowy

MOVE OVER HUNGER!

Adam Lowy, a life long resident of Oakhurst in Ocean Township, is leaving tomorrow on a month long journey  zigzagging back and forth across the country from California to North Carolina, Florida to Texas, Arizona to Chicago,  then back to Texas before heading home to New Jersey to promote his cause: Move For Hunger (MFH) a non-profit  organization founded in Neptune, N.J. by the Lowy family to help the “food insecure.”

By using their unique knowledge and experience - over 85 years in the family moving business - the Lowy’s Moving  Service was able to leverage their existing national network of transportation companies to create one of the nation’s largest, year-round service programs with Move For Hunger. “It’s a really good thing for the moving service and the  customers to be able to give back to the community. After years and years in the business you just see so much waste; people throw away so much food when they move. So what a great opportunity to clean out your cupboards, put it  aside and have the movers take it to the food bank.” Adam explains.

In 2009 our local FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties fed over 127,000 people, 40% of whom are children.  That’s a staggering 50,800 hungry kids! These numbers are increasing as our economy worsens. “Last year the need in  our area rose from six million pounds to eight million pounds of food. We are one of the wealthiest counties in the  country so just imagine what the need is in the rest of the nation.” Adam says.

Adam, who graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in marketing two years ago, then worked for Mercedes-Benz in their event planning department. He decided to commit to MFH full time as their Executive Director last July.

Not content with just helping the local communities, Adam and MFH is partnering with a network of philanthropic  moving businesses to join together in spreading awareness and fighting hunger on a nationwide level. “We started  thinking about it; why just us? There are thousands of moving companies all across the country. We started talking to  people, got our non-profit status, got some major people on board like Wheaton World Wide Moving and Victory Packaging - the largest tape and packaging distributor in North America - and it just kept getting bigger and bigger!”  says Adam enthusiastically. To date they already have 96 moving companies in 30 states and there is no doubt Adam's  positive energy and enthusiasm will rub off on everyone he meets along his country-wide journey.

His month long mission was made possible in part from a grant he won from Do Something and Jet Blue Airlines for a  months worth of free flights for two people anywhere they fly. It’s not the only grant he has won. In June, MFH was  awarded $20,000 from Chase Bank’s Community Giving competition for non-profit organizations. People voted for the most worthy on Facebook. “It was an intense Facebook campaign, tons of emailing, handshaking and voter pizza  partying. But in the end we won a sizable grant to help us continue our mission of hunger relief.” Adam recalls. All the  monies they raise go directly into the program and recruitment to get more people on board. The recent Surfside Food  Drive held over Labor Day Weekend featured three days of free live music and fun in the sun on the Asbury Park  Boardwalk as they collected food at 20 area beaches from Sea Bright down to Seaside with 30 plus collection  locations.

“We had some great sponsors for this event so the cost was minimal. The numbers aren’t in yet but the summer months  are when the food banks are at their lowest so the need is the greatest and we were able to restock a significant amount  of provisions for them.” Adam says proudly. The catch phrase that Adam and his younger brother Max came up with,  “Show Us Your Cans,” flew along the beach by aerial banner. It was a big hit and got them even more exposure which  they plan to use for their college outreach programs.

Adam’s younger sister Tracey and proud parents Gail and Keith Lowy will be glad to have him home safe after all that  flying…
