AN EPICUREAN FAMILY AFFAIR
The most beautifully appointed catering facility, Addison Park, rests on the northbound side of Route 35 in Aberdeen. You’ve probably passed it numerous times but never really gave much thought to the rich history of the family who took over the location (it has changed names and owners several times through the years) a few years ago and have made it the success it is today.
The Campitiello family has a legacy of serving the highest quality food and providing the best service in the industry. When patriarch Gerardo Campitiello first came to the United States from Italy as a young man he knew one thing…he wanted to be a successful chef. Armed with extensive training he had gotten in Rome, and having owned a Salumeria (Italian deli) there, he found himself working in several restaurants in Manhattan as both chef and executive chef at several well-known hotels – the Warwick, The Plaza, and The Regency, to name a few. One thing led to the next and dad soon became the proprietor of The Alps Restaurant in the late 1970’s to early 1980’s, and then later the Boulevard Hotel (later named the Monte Bianco) in Staten Island. Soon after, Gerardo bought what was formerly known as the Shalimar and converted it into the Excelsior Grand in 1993.
Gerardo’s four children are no strangers to the catering business. They all play a significant role in running the Excelsior Grand and Addison Park. Anthony runs the newly renovated Addison Park, with his brother Jerry, which officially opened in 2005 under the name Garden Manor. The new moniker honors a family-favorite restaurant in Boca Raton, Florida, called The Addison. Pair that up with the park-like setting and…voila. The new name, Addison Park, was unveiled in 2007!
Anthony remembers that at a young age he was peeling carrots and potatoes with his siblings in his dad’s restaurants. He says, “It was like baptism by fire. I just always knew that I wanted to be in the family business. One of my friends always says I got my bachelor’s degree at Monte Bianco! I worked my way up from the kitchen to the floor to now running Addison Park. I have a real appreciation for each person’s job here.”
So what makes these facilities two of the best in the area? Anthony says, “Dad always taught us that you give the customers superb food and quality service…that’s what sets us apart from a lot of our competitors. Early on, my dad brought Manhattanstyle service to Staten Island and helped to raise the bar.” That service is what you get each time you attend or have an affair or event at Addison Park. He adds, “All of the food is made on the premises with the freshest ingredients.”
The Campitiello family strongly believes that it is so important to give back the community. Anthony and his family donate both facilities several times a year for many charity events such as Hospice of New York, the Children’s Cancer Fund, the American Cancer Society, and Children with Autism, to name just a few of the causes close to their hearts. One of the larger charity events held at Addison Park is “Visions of Hope.” This event helps raise money for children with Muscular Dystrophy helping give them the opportunity to attend summer camp. Anthony works with several key organizers of the cause to help ensure a successful evening each year. His wife Crystal helps to decorate, and also works with Cherry Lane Florist, who donates the flowers. Many other local vendors donate food, cakes, pastries, wine, décor, and entertainment to create a beautiful event.
Crystal and Anthony chose to live in Marlboro because of the community feel, less congestion than Anthony’s native Staten Island, and the excellent school system. When Anthony isn’t working he likes to go fishing, but his favorite thing to do is spend time with his family. In fact, hanging out with his daughter Alexis is his favorite hobby!
