People On The Move - Barbara Marro
10/31/2010 - By Tobi Drucker Tesoriero
REACHING OUT THROUGH HER WORDS
Barbara Marro does not just think about doing things – she does them. She has worn many hats, having pursued several different careers. She is a published author, interior designer (she wrote a pamphlet/book on color coordination), dental technician and now office manager in her daughter’s dental practice in Colts Neck. She has raised four successful children and is a proud grandmother. Her family is the light of her life.
Barbara has authored two books. The first was entitled “Eight Steps to a Happy Life.” The next was “Smitty’s Cave Adventures.”
“Eight steps to a Happy Life” was her first book. It was published in 1994. It is predicated on proverbs. The editor and publisher said as it did so well in the U.S. they would also publish it in Mexico. The book speaks to a large audience.
According to Barbara the impetus for writing the book was that she was always giving advice. At the time she wrote it she was in the decorating business. She would go to clients to decorate and wind up entering their family life. Without realizing it she was giving advice. People said that she should write a book about her views. The first chapter is “Happiness is a state of mind.” She grapples with questions such as, if you win a lottery but a loved one is dying of cancer, how do you deal with that happiness? She also gives common sense advice such as if someone is miserable in a job – change it. Your mind has to be happy. Get it all together. The book deals with all aspects of life with proverbs as the jumping off point.
The book has been honored by being selected as part of the Library of Congress Collection. One of Barbara’s daughters, while in Washington D.C. at a conference, stopped by and was told her mother’s book was cited. A copy is kept in the Jefferson Library. Barbara’s daughter went to view the copy in the collection where it is well protected. She had to wear a certain protective garment. She was required to wear gloves to view the copy in the collection, and the book was presented to her by a guard that held on to her ID!
The next book Barbara wrote was “Smitty’s Cave Adventures”.
This second book was a departure for Barbara, who has written non-fiction for the majority of her life, penning opinion, magazine, and newspaper pieces.
The motivation for this book was her eight grandchildren to whom she told stories. They said, “Write a book grandma.” She replied, “How do I do that?” But then she sat down and on the first day it came right to her. The names came to her. She had never known a Smitty. It was almost like the story was waiting to be channeled through her.
The story is about a boy who has extreme dreams in a cave. There are mythic-sized creatures and adventures in store for Smitty. Each chapter has its own path. The story “just rolled off,” Barbara says. Her husband commented that she was smiling as she wrote. Her hope is that readers enjoy reading it as much as she enjoyed writing it!
Her editor said it hardly needed to be edited. That being said, it should be noted that Barbara did a lot of research for the book. For instance, she discovered that Eskimo males and females are equal, and they never spank or holler at the children. They are taught respect from birth.
Be it an adventure on an African safari or in a hot air balloon, Barbara researched it all to be accurate. The market for this book is young and young adult readers. She wanted them to acquire knowledge on what Smitty is going through with any particular adventure. Barbara further shared that all are exciting, but like life some are sad, some poignant.
Barbara purposely and cleverly left the book open ended so she could continue Smitty’s adventures if she wanted. Unfortunately, Barbara’s beloved husband passed away three years ago and she has not as yet felt the inspiration to write since his passing.
At age 78, Barbara shows no sign of slowing down. Barbara is appearing at a book signing and lecture locally, at the Mulberry Market, on Route 34 this fall. (Editor's note – At the time of this writing event is scheduled for October.) Both her books will be on display in the store.
For those interested please be aware that Barbara’s book are available from major booksellers such as Amazon or Barnes and Nobles online.
