SEARCHING FOR PURR-FECTION
When Bob Cutrupi does something, he goes for the gold. So when a Maine Coon cat walked into his life one day, it wasn’t long before he started investigating everything about them, getting more of them, and showing them at premier cat shows.
The result? In August, Bob’s cat Kokopelli won eight winner’s ribbons – out of eight show rings – at the Garden State Cat Club’s Annual Show (sponsored by the 100-year-old Cat Fanciers’ Association, located in Manasquan), to become a champion! Only six of these winner’s ribbons were necessary in order to achieve this prestigious honor, but “Koko”, in his first show as an adult (he’s about 1 year old), apparently decided he might as well go all the way.
Koko is aptly named: Kokopelli is the name of the mythical god of fertility of the ancient Anasazi tribe — he is intended to be used as a stud cat — and he is cocoa-colored. He is one of Bob’s three Maine Coon cats, which are generally considered the largest breed, with the male usually weighing in between 13 and 18 pounds. Their name derives from the fact that, because of their stripes and bushy tails, they were mistakenly thought by their original discoverers (a couple of hundred years ago) to be a cross between a “normal” cat and a raccoon! They are, however, quite impressive and are affectionately known as the “gentle giants” of the cat world.
Koko, Jazzman, and Trinity – all show cats – are part of a big family: they are joined by two other cats (Kitten and Possum), three dogs (Shadow, a yellow Lab; Frankie, a boxer; and Fluffanutter, a Shih Tzu); a Mexican doubleheaded yellow parrot named Sophia, two love birds, a parakeet, a rabbit, and 45 koi. No…no partridge in a pear tree – at least not yet!
The cats do have one advantage over Bob’s other pets; they have their own playroom. But all the animals receive much love from Bob and his new wife, Donna Zappone, who is the Director of Rehabilitation Services at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital. One might say that just because Bob is discriminating it doesn’t mean he discriminates! You can tell from the many animal-related pictures and artifacts in his house and you can feel the genuine warmth he and his wife give to their entire family of creatures. In fact, most of the pets were rescues,” saved by Bob’s and Donna’s caring hearts.
None of this was easy, however. Bob relates that when he and his first wife divorced in 1999 she took all eight of their cats, which was, of course, heartbreaking. Moreover, as a young child he was so allergic to cats that he ended up in the hospital! But he wasn’t about to let that stop him; as previously mentioned, he is a determined fellow and his persistence has obviously paid off. He’s no longer allergic, he has a beautiful home full of lovely pets – all of whom get along – and he is in the process of raising even more prize-winning cats. At the time of this writing, he is expecting a new arrival, a female Maine Coon kitten who will be destined to be Koko’s “wife,” to eventually produce a lovely litter of prize-winning babies.
Bob is also passionate about his job as a Senior Portfolio Manager for Smith Barney, where he has worked since1983. The Cutrupi Group, located in Shrewsbury, specializes in discretionary asset management services and financial advice, particularly regarding stock management during and after retirement. He also teaches a non-credit course about the stock market at Brookdale Community College. He lists his other interests as driving and showing his 1983 Delorean automobile, largemouth bass fishing, photography, playing guitar, and photographing and studying wolves. He loves Colts Neck, where he has lived since 1985 after moving from Brooklyn. He says although he grew up in the city he knew he was always a country boy at heart, and was attracted to Colts Neck because of its natural beauty and open space. Just enough for all his wonderful animals!
Information about Bob’s pets — including contact information for prospective owners of the breeding cats – can be found at www.shadowcoons.com; “shadowcoons” is the name of Bob’s cattery.
