People On The Move: Bob Mackler
04/07/2009
EMMY AWARD-WINNING PRODUCTION EDITOR
Two-time Emmy Award winner Bob Mackler received his awards for doing what he loves best – working behind the scenes in television production. In his role as a postproduction editor for CBS’s long- running soap opera, “As the World Turns,” he is in charge of “sweetening” the audio, adding the sound effects and mixing it down to what it will sound like on the air. He says, “Once the studio shoots the particular scenes for an episode it comes to the edit room and my partner and I piece it all together like a jigsaw puzzle. We make sure the pacing and timing are accurate and edit out the scenes the producer decides not to use.”
Bob and his partner alternate from video to audio. “On any given day one of us will work on the video edit while the other one will be working on a different show, but on the audio side of things,” he explains. The studio is about 4 weeks ahead of what viewers see on the air and his department is about 3 weeks ahead.
As a child growing up in the 1950’s, television was a big part of Bob’s life. He says he grew up “wanting to jump inside the TV set.” He studied television production in college and even tried his hand at acting. After college he started working for CBS as a general editor and technician in New York City. Eventually, he got assigned to “As the World Turns” and over time became a permanent editor for the show.
Bob typically works a 14-hour day at the studio in Brooklyn. “Day-to-day I really have no idea what it’s going to be like. Some days I could be there editing until all hours of the night.” However, it’s obvious when talking to him that he wouldn’t trade his job for the world. This is a man clearly passionate about what he does and he seems grateful to be working in the television industry. “For someone like me who grew up with television as a big part of my life…to actually have a career in this industry is a dream come true.” Bob and his wife Laura have lived in Morganville for 14 years with their three children. He says it was the excellent school system that drew them to the area. “Marlboro is an extremely well-organized suburban community. I love the fact that we are just 20 minutes from the beach and under an hour from the city. I think it is an ideal place to live.” He is also a big fan of the recreation options in town, especially the Marlboro Swim Club.
When Bob is not working on the soap opera he like to share his expertise with the town. He is part of the music boosters at the Marlboro High School and is responsible for recording their football games as well as their concerts; he also produces the cd’s that the boosters sell to help raise money for the school and was also the “official videographer” when his kids were swimming for the Marlboro Swim Club swim team. Each year he would create a mini-movie that they would play at the end-of-the-year banquet. In addition, Bob volunteers his time working the camera for Marlboro’s local cable TV station, Channel 77; he performs a variety of tasks for the station as well, from running the audio to directing shows.
Bob says his kids are big fans of “As the World Turns”; when he’s home, he too likes to catch up on some of his work. “Our show has been around since 1956 and it was one of the first soap operas. It has a rich history and a great storyline. I also like watching the competition to see what they are up to. When Emmy season comes around the competition between shows really starts to heat up. It usually centers on developing better storylines and creating more elaborate productions.”
Speaking of Emmys, we had to ask where he keeps his two prized possessions. “Both Emmys are on the mantle – one on each end.”
