People On The Move - Cynthia Scott

THE GREAT COMMUNICATOR
As far back as Cynthia Scott can remember she has always known that she would one day grow up to have a career in the news business. Scott recalls when she and her brother would sit home and literally call several newscasters. She says, “When we were young, we would look them up and call them either at home or at the TV station. Some of them were extremely receptive. Chuck Scarborough actually invited my brother to the studio! My brother, who is now an actor and producer in California, and I, have always had a love for entertainment!”
Soon after graduating from Villanova University with a B.A. in Communications and Drama and receiving an M.A. in Journalism from New York University, Scott began her career. First, she landed a gig at WCNJ-FM, a small radio station based in Hazlet at the time. Scott armed herself with “demos” from her onair stint there and sent tapes out all over the country. She accepted the first offer she got at Cablevision of Monmouth where she gained valuable reporting, editing and anchoring experience. After four years there the newshound made her next move to News 12 New Jersey where she reported and anchored for about 11 years. Cynthia says, “I learned so much there. I got to go places that people don’t usually go to and see things people might not get to see. The biggest story I covered was 9/11. There are so many New Jersey angles to find in National stories and of course on the local level.” Cynthia proudly touts that she was the first Emmy Award winning reporter at News 12. She received the accolade for her work in the spring of 1999. “I won the award for a story about prostitution in Newark. We went out at night and found a woman who was willing to talk to us and covered the issue.“
In December of 2006, Cynthia made the decision to try something different which would provide a bit more stability. She adds, “I did everything there…I hosted shows, I anchored, reported, edited, met so many people …and after eleven years, I said to myself it might be time to make a change. I always said that the best public information officers that I spoke to were former reporters and I thought that would be my next career move. I felt like I needed a more stable environment while raising our twin girls.”
Scott’s next move would be to secure the position of Undersherrif/Public Information Officer at the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office in 2007. And that’s where she’s been since. Cynthia says, “It’s a good fit! I really care about the Sheriff’s Office. It’s a great office to work for. We have dedicated employees and great programs to offer.” Scott serves as the spokesperson for the office and has plenty of responsibilities that she handles on a daily basis. She receives several press inquires every day, requests for inmate information from the correctional facilities and so much more. She says, “We are always setting up programs. I write a lot of press releases and update the website on a regular basis.” The job did not come without some challenge. When Scott landed the position several years back, she certainly knew how to get the information out there, but had to research and learn about every department at the Monmouth County Sheriff’s office so that she understood all of the dynamics. Scott adds, “I had to really do my homework about all of these divisions, and I am still learning. I always have to know what’s going on.” Cynthia serves as “undersheriff” at the office and has worked directly with former Monmouth County Sheriffs Joseph Oxley and recently Kim Guadagno, who is now serving as New Jersey’s first Lieutenant Governor. Presently she is working with Acting Sheriff Shaun Golden.
Cynthia also serves as the host of “Monmouth In Focus.” It’s a program produced at Brookdale Community College that’s seen on many local access channels throughout the county and at www.visitmonmouth.com. The show helps to bring local government news to viewers. Scott is married to News 12 Meteorologist James Gregorio. The couple, along with their 5-yearold twin girls, Ava and Nicole, enjoy spending summer days at the beach and spending time as a family.
