People On The Move - Ken Davis

LION’S CLUB PRESIDENT

In every community you'll find a group of caring people that volunteer their time to enrich the lives of others. Colts Neck resident Ken Davis is one of those special people.

Since 1995 Ken Davis has devoted himself to helping his community through his involvement in the Lions Club. Ken first became involved with the Lions Organization when a neighbor asked him to come to a meeting at Maryann’s restaurant. From the first  meeting Ken knew he liked the organization. Specifically because the group does not keep any money; 100% of the funds that are raised goes to charity.

Ken is presently his chapter’s president. He explained that the Colts Neck branch of the Lions presently has 58 members, 35 of which are active. The Lions are broken into districts and the local Colts Neck Club is District 16b.

When asked how charities are chosen to be recipients of fund raising efforts, Ken said that the Lions have a list of recognized charities. Additionally, Lions 16b respond to the needs of the people in town as well. For instance, if someone has special  circumstances, such as a serious illness like cancer, they will do what they can to help and rarely turn down anyone in need.

Ken stated the Lions’ motto is, “We serve.” He also mentioned that many people are aware of the efforts that the Lions have made through the years in support of sight. They have an ongoing eyeglass collection project where they gather donated old  eyeglasses from a bin in front of the Colts Neck Post Office.

In support of their fund raising goals the Lions participate in a multitude of activities through the year. They host an annual Wine Tasting event at Buck Mills in the spring. They feature a pancake breakfast each fall around Halloween. The Lions also participate  in the Town Fair with their Hole in One game of chance and sell glow sticks for the fourth of July. They also participate in road clean-up initiatives along Route 34 in town. The 16b Colts Neck Lions have been recognized as one of the top fund raisers in their  district!

When asked how someone can become a member Ken said that anyone interested can call for more information or come to a meeting. Existing members sponsor most individuals who join, but the club is open to anyone. In fact, the Colts Neck Lions Club is  now coed. The first females joined their ranks in the fall of 2009. Ken mentioned if someone is interested in learning more about the Lions they should visit their website at www.coltsnecklionsclub.org.

Ken has been a resident of Colts Neck since 1993 when he and his wife, Susan, decided to raise their family here. Prior to living in Colts Neck the Davis’ lived in Parlin. Ken is originally from South River where his family business, Parkway Specialty Foods is  still based.

The Davis’ have a son and a daughter who are also very active in the community. Ken’s son is working on becoming an Eagle Scout and his daughter will be graduating from Colts Neck High School’s Language Arts Honors Program.

Ken not only serves as President of the Colts Neck Lions Club; for the past four years he has served as the Assistant Scout Master of Troop 290 in town. He was himself a scout in his younger years and when his son joined he became involved with scouting  again.

Music is another passion of Ken’s. He plays several instruments and devotes part of each day to practicing. He plays the piano, guitar and bass guitar among other instruments. He also was a vocalist and performed with several bands in the 1970’s.

Ken feels Colts Neck is a great place to live and to raise a family and shared that he is both devoted to and entrenched in the town. That connection is part of the impetus for his strong involvement with Colts Neck Lions. He truly enjoys giving back to the community. And at the risk of sounding corny, we can say his efforts have met with a “roaring” success!
