People On The Move - Kim Folio-Dorland

BEAUTIFYING THE WORLD
Kim Folio-Dorland wears many hats – mom, artist, designer, craftswoman, and businesswoman. She also owns and runs Folio Art Glass, along with her parents and husband. Kim became involved in the business after graduating college. She initially thought of pursuing a career in law, and even majored in pre-law at American University in Washington, DC, but she kept putting law on the back burner. She returned to New Jersey and went to Rutgers for psychology, then to Brookdale for Interior Design, all the while working for her parents.
At that time her parents physically moved the business from the home location to a dedicated studio. (The business originally was operated using kilns in the family’s garage). The first store opened in the back of Colts Towne Plaza. Soon Kim realized that this was where she really wanted to be. Her mom created new products, her dad worked the kiln, and Kim, the artist, helped to execute the pieces.
Kim had taken art classes her whole life. In college she took many art history and fine arts courses, and her technical ability and background benefit the business. Besides the creative and artistic satisfaction she gets from the studio, Kim loves dealing with the customers, one of her favorite parts of her job. She has developed personal relationships with many, remembering their preferences, and has lots of fun helping them pick out gifts. She really gets involved with her customers, and many of them have become friends! For instance, one customer-turned-friend made a quilt for her son, Jack, who she brings with her to work everyday. Kim has found the studio to be a center…a hub of creativity. She really enjoys the relationships she has established in the Colts Neck community and feels that is her other forte, besides the designing. Kim really enjoys designing personalized items as well. She said that at Folio Art she works on various custom projects like unique wedding favors. When asked what her least favorite part of her job was, Kim cited the pressure of deadlines for custom orders, especially for corporate accounts. Deadlines are stressful and then there is also the expected chaos around holiday season.
Sharing the process of making a piece from start to finish, Kim said that the first thing is to come up with a design idea. She constantly looks through magazines, notes trends, and pays attention to customers’ requests. If she hears a lot of requests for sand dollars, botanicals, or seashore motifs, she knows there’s a trend developing. When it comes to creating the piece she looks at the real item, but also has to design in circles to accommodate the plates and sun catchers. She creates designs that work as stencils, too. Through years of experience Kim instinctively knows what works. Next, she determines what colors work for the design. Then she cuts the clear glass into circles, and holes are carefully drilled for sun catchers. She washes the glass, removing any shards or dust, and paints with stencils and powdered enameled paint. In the enameling process, three different sifters – small, medium, and large – are used; the small one is used in detail work to highlight the design. Kim layers colors one on top of the other. This is an especially precise process so the colors don’t shift and destroy the design. Next, she carefully brings the piece to the kiln to fire at which point a plate sandwich is created – glass with paint in between. This is put into a ceramic mold, and then the glass is either fused or is laminated. Exposure to surface fire makes it one piece of glass that will never fade. The final step is washing, signing, and pricing it.
When not working at the studio, this creative lady loves cooking and baking. In fact, Kim, her sister, and father all enjoy cooking, and they try to out-do each other with their culinary skills! She also enjoys gardening. So add to the artist’s beret and mommy cap a pair of gardening gloves and a chef’s hat, and you’ll have a glimpse at the multi-faceted and talented Kim Folio-Dorland.
