People On The Move - Larissa Shulman

PRESERVING A RIGHTEOUS LEGACY

The horror of genocide has reared its head throughout history. The amount of cruelty that repressive governments have imposed on  others is heartbreaking and shameful. One of these terrible occurrences was the Holocaust. Under Nazi rule, the world saw ethnic  hatred brought to previously unimagined heights of brutality. One of the goals of this regime was the extermination of a people  because of their Jewish background. The violence of this reign is a stain and mark against humanity.

However, like a small flower breaking through the cement in a blighted city landscape, some hope and kindness broke through.

Putting their own personal safety aside, quiet heroes set out to save what souls they could. Exhibiting bravery, selflessness, honor and righteousness these people, who were not Jewish, put their own lives at risk to save the lives of others. As time marches on  from this terrible period in history, those heroes are aging along with their stories.

These rescuers are today being recognized and helped by an organization called The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous (JFR). According to its literature it “provides financial support to more than 900 non-Jews who rescued Jews during the Holocaust and  preserves their legacy through a national education program.”

Colts Neck’s own Larissa Shulman has dedicated herself to this organization. She is making sure the world knows the story of these remarkable people in her role as a Program Associate in the educational division.

Larissa explained that the education department runs programs for educators who teach about the Holocaust. JFR provides seminars led by scholars from around the world. They share their research and insights and give the teachers pedagogic tools to take back to the classroom.

When asked how an educator gets to participate, Larissa explained that teachers are recommended from 16 centers of excellence the foundation partners with. These centers are located throughout the United Sates. They nominate one to two teachers per year. Teachers from public, private, Jewish, Christian and secular schools all participate. Participants generally teach seventh and eighth grade and high school and are primarily English and Social Studies teachers.

JFR hosts a summer institute at Columbia University. The teacher attendees are deemed Learner Fellows. They are then able to  attend other seminars.

Despite her young age, 24, Larissa has been involved in Holocaust related programs for a number of years. While attending Colts Neck High School, Larissa volunteered at The Holocaust, Genocide & Human Rights Education Center at Brookdale Community College.

It was actually through her involvement there that Larissa learned of career opportunities at JFR. Additionally, Larissa majored in  Modern European History at Cornell University, which gave her a great foundation in this era of history. During college Larissa  also studied abroad, focusing on Holocaust history. Her travels have not stopped. With JFR, she was able to participate in an  intensive educational trip through Germany and Poland, accompanying worldclass scholar Robert Jan van Pelt.

Larissa has even had the honor to meet some of the rescuers! During her trip to Europe, in Berlin she had dinner with rescuer Freida Adam — who still lives where she rescued. Larissa also attended a luncheon for rescuers in Warsaw. She said that there were  between 40 and 50 rescuers attending. Although many didn’t speak English, it was still a wonderful and meaningful experience. The  Polish ambassador from the United States was there as well. As a result of this luncheon, some of the teachers implemented an  “adopt-a-rescuer” initiative in their classrooms; they have students write letters to the rescuers.

Larissa gets great satisfaction from her work at JRF and at this time sees her career path staying in the world of not for profits.

[Editors note: More information about JFR can be found on their website at www.jfr.org]
