People On The Move: Lianne Brock
03/05/2009
CHANGING LIFE THROUGH LITERACY
After attending just one Monmouth County Reading Council meeting, Lianne Brock found her calling. Even before accepting the post of Publicity Spokesperson, she started “driving” people toward the cause. This dedicated volunteer is doing her part when it comes to spreading the powerful message about reading around Monmouth County.
The council is looking for more than just the 100 members who are already on board. Lianne is calling out to all teachers and educators to join in this mission. She adds, “We believe every teacher is a reading teacher! We need to collaborate and realize new ways to get children to read more. We are competing against computers and video games.” On the local level, the council is trying to put together additional workshops for teachers to come together. Lianne says, “We want more speakers – famous authors and poets – to join us in getting the message out there about the importance of literacy.” The council recognizes that there are many underprivileged children in Monmouth County who need books. “We have so many goals to meet,” Brock adds.
In the past year the council has had a few other accomplishments that they are proud of, including: Have a Heart, Give a Book, where books are donated and wrapped and given to the less fortunate children in and around Monmouth County, and The Annual MCRC Spring Poetry Contest, which Lianne is promoting for the spring. Students are being asked to write a poem about their favorite book. Each grade level is included in the contest, and the winners will be honored and presented with a gift at Barnes and Noble. They also have undertaken The Literacy Project of the International Committee of NJRA in Guatemala. Dr. Jane Sullivan, who makes sure the bi-lingual books that are donated go to the underprivileged people of that country, guides this literacy project. Jane and other members of the NJRA travel there twice a year to pass out the books and literacy materials. While in Guatemala, the members make it their business to “spread the word” to the children and give workshops to the teachers.
“We were a very small council that at one point almost didn’t exist any longer. We didn’t have the funding and the message wasn’t getting out. So, through our work we are really happy that our membership has grown so much in this past year.” Brock explains that the council needs to continue to add members so they can remain strong advocates to get their message heard.
Lianne says literacy is her passion, as are her language arts students who she teaches (in the 4th and 5th grades) at Saint Leo The Great School in Lincroft. She is in the process of getting certified for language arts and literacy for high school. In addition, Lianne is going back to school to become a reading specialist. “My philosophy for teaching is to instill the love of learning in my students. I love to see them succeed. I absolutely adore what I do.”
Brock is also a breast cancer survivor. Through her personal experience she shares her strength and knowledge with the public. It has been 3 years since her battle began. She says, “Even when I was first diagnosed I was never afraid. I needed to be strong for my three children. My oncologist told me that I needed to spread the word. They hooked me up with the American Cancer Society to speak and to connect with others stricken with the illness.” Brock was a survivor speaker for 2006 and 2007 for the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.” “You need to be positive from the get go. Since I read a lot, I did my research and knew that since it was caught early I had a great chance beating it.” Brock’s advice is to be your own advocate. The 13-year Marlboro resident says you need to be smart and go for second opinions. She adds, “Early detection is everything.”
When Lianne isn’t busy helping others she makes sure she fits exercise into her schedule. She feels it is important to do it at least four to five times a week to stay healthy. “I put my iPod® on and escape.”
