People On The Move - Premise Martin
04/30/2011 - By Teja Anderson
ALIAS “SKY LA ROSE”
Three years ago on Thanksgiving eve, when Marlboro resident Premise Martin was laid off from her accounting job with the Weinstein Company, the independent American film studio founded by Harvey and Bob Weinstein, she knew just what she wanted to do: go back to school, but this time for broadcast journalism.
Raised by her grandmother in Columbia, S. C., Premise had an uncle who was the first African American in the state to become a Certified Public Accountant with his own firm and bank. “My Uncle really was my father figure growing up, and so I followed in his footsteps and went into accounting and I did that for seventeen years! But, my true love was really broadcasting,” Premise recalls.
She enrolled in the Connecticut School of Broadcasting, which has a satellite campus in Bergen County. After graduating, she was hired as an intern by one of her professors - Bartel, the Music Director and on-air personality for dance radio station WKTU (103.5 FM). He noticed both her passion for radio and her drive for success. From there she was referred to an internship at LITE FM (106.7), also out of New York, and then went on to the design department for Clear Channel, which owns many radio stations in the same building, including the popular Z100. Then, as there were no jobs for her in radio at that time, Premise was offered her old job back at the Weinstein Company - only to be laid off again later that year!
But Premise was not in the least bit discouraged; everyone kept telling her that she “had what it takes.” It was around this time that she reconnected on FaceBook with an old friend, Candace Sandy, who with her writing partner, Dawn Marie Daniels, had coauthored ten books in the “Tears To Triumph: Women Learn to Live, Love and Thrive” series, inspirational stories and essays by African American women. Premise went to a book signing and stood up to talk about her own life and hardships and how she had changed careers to follow her dream of being on the radio.
In the audience that day was Harlem radio station WHCR (90.3FM) personality Leroy Baylor. He invited her to be on his 1 – 3 p.m. weekly Sunday show, Harlem News. In addition to her new radio gig, Premise was asked to write a song to accompany her friends’ book and so she wrote and sang, “Souls of My Sisters” which she performs at their book signings. It was in fact at a recording studio that she first met her husband of 12 years, Harold, with whom she has two beautiful children, son Harold III (9) and daughter Amber Rose (6).
Because of the success of the books, Premise saw an opportunity to create and host a Blogtalk Radio show for “Tears To Triumph” and created her on-air personality and moniker, “Sky La Rose.”
“All my instructors at CT School of Broadcasting told me that I needed to have a three syllable name. They told me to dig deep within and find a name that fits. I have always felt that I was heavenly blessed...” Premise pauses, her eyes brimming with tears. “I knew it to be so because last year, in March, I had a heart attack. My gynecologist had found my fourth cyst, this one the size of a grapefruit, and was recommending surgery. The doctors had found 12 kidney stones, six on each side, too big to pass. I was in a lot of pain.”
Premise and her husband turned to their Korean Taekwondo Grand Master for help. He referred them to ten Korean Spiritual Healers in Fort Lee, N.J. and for 30 days Premise received their energy healing sessions. The day before her surgeries were scheduled an MRI showed the cysts and kidney stones were gone. “I chose the name Sky La Rose because “Sky” means heaven and “Rose” is the sweet smell of success - and I love roses,” Premise says, composing herself.
Premise has also been asked to write and sing a commercial jingle for a local spirit/liqueur, Love Potion #9®, and she sings it for us as we leave. Like a rose her voice is velvety smooth and rich with color…..
