Les Friedman, Owner Noethern Valley AffairsBIO: Les Friedman has a culinary background, has been in the catering industry since he was 15 years old, and loves what he does! He started as a busboy and worked his way up to waiter, bartender, maître d’, manager, and now owner of Northern Valley Affairs at Temple Emanu-el in Closter, N.J., the newest facility in the family-owned Bernstein & Freidman kosher catering company.

Northern Valley Affairs

 “My grandfather, Philip Friedman, started the business during the Depression,” recalls Les. His family has been serving the Greater New York Metropolitan Jewish community for almost 80 years, and they continue to provide unparalleled cuisine, service and atmosphere. They only do one event per day, so it feels more like a boutique facility, since the team is completely dedicated to you and your affair.

 

Les and Northern Valley Affairs are enthusiastic about helping you plan a celebration that reflects your tastes and preferences. “You’ll get the personalized service and attention you deserve – from the first time you meet with us, you’ll always be invited to come for tastings and see the venue as many times as you’d like,” Les notes. He also provides clients with both his office and cell phone numbers so he’s easily available to answer any questions. “I want you to feel like you’re a guest at your own affair,” he says.

 

They also encourage clients to be guided by their own personalities in shaping their events, which helps bring them to life. For example, they recently helped a bride plan a country-themed wedding. “We did an outdoor wedding in our courtyard where she walked on to the grass towards her chuppah, which was built out of bark and wood,” Les says. “The centerpieces in the ballroom were made of wooden branches, and there were rustic birch branch canopies above the guests’ tables.”

 

They can also create unique kosher menus. “One bride really wanted a kosher French menu, so we carried that theme from the cocktail hour through the reception,” Les notes. They get many specific ethnic food requests and are happy to prepare dishes that are unique to your family.

 

“Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, and bris and baby namings are important lifetime occasions,”

Les says. “Now, doing catering for over 30 years, I’m creating dream weddings for the same people I did Bar and Bat Mitzvahs for – it’s very special!”

 

In addition to doing weddings and Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, Northern Valley Affairs’ off-premise kosher/Glatt kosher catering business has been booming. “Our industry clients have been booking us to cater kosher events at the venue of their choice, since we produce the same quality and style of cuisine, whether it’s at our place or theirs,” Les says.
