A Home with a View
Richard and Nancy Cohen have been married for the last 31 years and consider the last 10, living in their custom built English Manor-inspired home, to be some of their happiest. Nancy and Richard have called many places home over the last three decades, including Brooklyn Heights, Long Island, Marlboro, Freehold Township and Colts Neck.
They had lived in Freehold Township for a number of years. But they decided the town was being over-built and decided they wanted a more rural atmosphere for their family to live in. Colts Neck offered a much less suburban back drop and they loved the small town feel and country setting Colts Neck is so famous for.
The Cohen’s complemented each other in every way when it came to designing and planning their first custom built home together. The 8,000 square foot manor-style house is a credit to their passion for life and their focus on family. Architect and designer James Monteforte of Ocean Township helped realize the Cohen’s vision and created a classically inspired design using natural materials, such as stone and cedar, to make the Cohen’s dreams come true.
The location of the Cohen’s manor house can only be described as magical. The house is sited on one acre of wooded property with magnificent views and access to the Swimming River Reservoir. The Cohen’s home is truly a home for all seasons with a natural backdrop including mature protected wooded areas and glistening waters.
Richard has an engineering background and was very involved with the design and overall architectural plan of his family’s dream home. A great example of his meticulous approach to design included the hiring of a professional lighting designer to create the unique and effective low voltage lighting system that illuminates the family home from the inside out.
Attention to detail and a meticulous approach can be seen and enjoyed throughout the Cohen’s home. Nancy’s input became invaluable when it came to color choices, materials and finishes. The resulting masterpiece of design and magnificent location make their home a particularly fine example of a creatively inspired vision becoming a family friendly and elegant living reality.
The views of the Swimming River Reservoir from the Cohen’s beautiful home are stunning twelve months a year, twenty-four hours a day. Flora and fauna abound, making a walk around the neighborhood a pleasure of sight and sound.
The great room takes full advantage of the water views and afternoon sun. The row of eight sliding doors and vaulted ceiling with windows give an open feeling to this spacious and comfortable interior. The furnishings are plush and comfortable, owing much to the Cohen’s belief that a home should feel as good as it looks. Some of their home furnishings came with them from other homes they had owned, but many were purchased specifically for their new dream house on the reservoir.
The Cohen’s dining room exemplifies the overall family friendly focus of their design concept. The chandelier is a family heirloom, as are many of the vintage ceramics displayed artfully on a mahogany side board. The deep red of the walls is a tasty choice in a dining room and envelops the rich woods warmly.
The Cohen’s gourmet kitchen features a commercial Viking® stove and Sub-Zero® double refrigerator. The kitchen is located just off the great room making this area a much used and enjoyed central gathering spot for friends and family.
The Cohen’s daughter is responsible for much of the custom artwork found
in the home. The stained glass hanging in a number of kitchen windows
are geometric in design and contrast with the natural shape of the
landscape design beyond, to great effect.
The Cohen’s master suite is truly a home within a home. The accent is on comfort, soft colors and a connection, through natural light, with the landscape beyond. The spacious bedroom includes a wonderfully comfortable and comforting sitting area and a luxurious master bath. The bath features a sunken jetted tub and well-appointed oversized walk in shower.
The Cohens have two children and their daughter is quite a talented artist. Her bedroom reflects a soft, wistful feeling while her painting has the mystery only a work of fine art can inspire.
A screening room has been created out of a first floor master suite space. The Cohen’s home features six bedrooms and creating a space for the entire family to enjoy makes perfect sense, as long as everyone wants to watch the same film!
