Riverside Living

A Tide of Change Restores a 105-year-old Bungalow

Joe and Aimee Paccione met as juniors, while attending Toms River High School, and have been together ever since. Joe is in the real estate appraisal business and Aimee works with him in their family-owned company. They both share a passion for older homes and waterfront living, so when the opportunity to purchase a home on the Manasquan River in Brielle became available, they put their renovation caps on and went to work. The Paccione children – Tobey, 4, Carter, 12, and Victoria, 16 – all love the water and were excited at the prospect of having their own dock. Each of the Paccione children enjoys a special hobby or sport related to the deep blue: Tobey likes crabbing, Carter surfs, and Victoria is into water sports like jet skiing and ski tubing. The Pacciones’ first memory, though, was participating in the large demolition job on their new family home. The home Joe and Aimee had found had been in one family’s hands for quite some time. The house had been built in 1903 as a 1,000-square-foot bungalow. The home had been added to over the years, but Joe and Aimee had their own plans for this special house. The house sits on 1/2 acre of riverside property, and now measures 5,112 square feet. The complete renovation took 10 months to complete and pays homage to the home’s location and history, while taking on the character of the Paccione family’s interest and design sense. The   resulting home expresses a sense of joy and comfort with a tip of the cap toward the blue waters just beyond the front door.

Magnificent water views of the Manasquan River are available both inside and out of the Paccione home.  The roof of the pool room becomes a perfect, elevated deck where friends and family can sip a cool drink, bask in the sun, and enjoy watching the tidal intervals from a high perch.  Aimee remembers the challenges of the renovation with a sigh, including working the heating and cooling systems into the renovation.  A flexible Unico® tube system proved to be just the ticket for this historic home.

The kitchen is an eclectic mix of painted finishes natural woods, and a variety of granite countertops, all pulled together by classic design and a well-thought-out layout.  The extensive renovation included removing some walls and drop ceilings, using dark paneling, and raising the ceiling height, but Aimee always had the home’s history in mind and chose to keep the historic theme going through moulding choices and a playful color palette.

The indoor pool addition was an earlier renovation, and Joe and Aimee decided to leave that section of the home untouched.

The inviting living room space includes the original fireplace hearth and driftwood mantle.  The coffered ceiling is new, but     fits right in with the antique and newer furnishings.  Aimee calls her style eclectic and free-flowing, while always inviting and never ostentatious or formal to the point of austerity.

The upstairs originally had five bedrooms, but for the Pacciones’ more modern lifestyle, square footage was needed to expand the   bathrooms and closet space.  The resulting master suite includes a sitting room and a  spacious master bath that would welcome even the most salty of riverboat captains home for a warm bubble bath and a tall glass of rum.

Color is another theme used throughout. The rich color scheme includes salmon, golds, and earth tones that all work in  concert to create a waterside spirit and symphony for the eye.
