Waterfront Lifestyle Reflects a Passion for Living
Sal Tringola and Diane Bonpua met in 1986; Diane was working as a real estate agent and Sal was looking for a house to buy in the Rumson/Tinton Falls area. A couple of years after their first encounter, Sal and Diane met in a more social setting, and they’ve been together ever since. Sal, says [with a chuckle] that they have been happily “engaged for over 20 years.”
Diane grew up in the West Long Branch area and Sal was born in Newark. Sal’s father was a butcher and Sal remembers working in the family business as a child. His father bought a business in Monmouth Beach, called The Corner Store, in 1956, after answering an ad in the Star Ledger; at that time, Monmouth Beach was a “very small town.”
Sal’s dad went on to purchase the Lincoln Hotel in Asbury Park in 1960, which also included the Candy Cane Lounge. He operated both until he sold the hotel in 1965. He kept The Corner Store in Monmouth Beach, and expanded it in 1979, and was operated at the time by Sal, his sister, and his brother-in-law.
Sal left the food business for a time and operated three horse transportation businesses. He commented that after meeting owners, trainers, and jockeys from Monmouth Race Track over the years at The Corner Store he gained an affinity for horse racing. After meeting Diane, the couple began to look for a business they could run together. They opened Saldina’s in 1990, an Italian deli and specialty shop in the Freehold area, which flourished for over 10 years. Sal always kept an eye out for a restaurant back in his family’s old Monmouth Beach waterside roots, and 9 years ago he found one to call their own; it’s now called Sallee Tee’s Waterfront Grille. The last piece of Sal and Diane family puzzle was finding a place near the water to call home. Monmouth Beach was the natural choice, and the beautiful lot they found and purchased 5 years ago, upon which they have built their dream home, includes beautiful vistas of the Shrewsbury River and a view of Sallee Tee’s in the distance. The couple couldn’t be happier with their new digs by the water’s edge.
From the very beginning of the design process for their new home, Sal and Diane knew they didn’t want a boxy design. They originally thought to renovate the older home located on the 100′ x 120′ lot, including the bulk-headed dock. Once construction began, a number of issues were encountered and ultimately overcome, but the total process took 4 years from plan to finish. The actual construction took 14 months, and the final design was achieved with architect James Monteforte’s integration of what turned out to be very little of the old structure. Diane and Sal are thrilled with their finally completed home, where they can now sit back and enjoy waterfront living in Monmouth Beach.
The shingle-style home includes a variety of design styles and architectural details, all combined in a magnificent, overall, singular vision. The inclusion of arched windows, a craftsman inspired color palette, shingle siding, and stone details offer a variety of materials and surface finishes that add much to the visual interest of this home. The striking gardens and landscaping design can be credited to Diane’s background as an ornamental horticulturist design major in school.
The gardens add splashes of seasonal color, and the hardscape elements, like the pond, rocks, and walls help elegantly and effectively frame the home’s architecture. A family of swans enjoy stopping by Sal and Diane’s home almost as much as regulars enjoy stopping in at Sallee Tee’s for a late-night meal. Sal’s classic 1959 Model ’98 Oldsmobile also looks right at home in front of their dream home.

Diane and Sal wanted a kitchen that worked and looked great. The end result is a well-designed form that follows function layout and a professional Dacor appliance package. The natural cherry cabinets offer visual warmth, and the granite countertops give ample space on which to prepare the many Sunday dinners Sal and Diane host for friends and family.

The downstairs powder room features a custom, round, stained-glass window depicting a stylized heron water bird design. The entry offers a unique gallery that allows light in from above, as well as a dramatic view of the custom iron railing. The massive 4-foot wide mahogany door, with sidelights, was a special request by Diane, and makes a bold statement. The personal elevator makes the ups and downs in this multilevel home a convenient and stylish pleasure.

The grand family room features a dramatic wall of custom windows allowing for great views of theShrewsbury River in any season. A tumbled marble fireplace surround and custom-built mahogany display hutches with arched tops flank the impressive
fireplace. The hand-crafted tin piranha was purchased in Phoenix, Arizona, by Diane and her mother (proudly known as the garage-sale queen) on a recent trip out west. The bronze race horse and rider give an artistic clue to Sal’s continued interest in horse racing. He still owns three actively raced thoroughbreds.

The master bath includes marble and mosaic wall tile details, along with an oversized jetted soaking tub located below a pretty-as-a-picture glass window.

colorful parrot that overlooks the fun and games as they are played below. The oak flooring and rich colors add to the comfortable setting and welcoming atmosphere.
