Shabby Chic & Chandeliers - The Brillers
06/27/2010 - By A.J. Perna Photography by: AK Photo / Al Kruper
The Brillers shed some light on style
In 1998, after much planning and a move that had brought them 3,000 miles east, from California all the way to Monmouth County, Mitch and Dayna Briller had finally set up house in the Garden State. Not that they were strangers to New Jersey, mind you. Dayna was originally from East Brunswick and Mitch was a Marlboro native. But after a brief stint on the West Coast, the Brillers were now ready to make Marlboro their home.
Preceding their cross-country trek, Mitch and Dayna had scouted around Marlboro in an effort to find the perfect place to plant their blossoming family, and soon the perfect opportunity landed in their laps. A brand-new neighborhood in town was in its beginning phases and the Brillers were able to get in on the ground floor. Jumping in so early, they had their choice of lots and a large selection of customizable building plans from which to choose. And customize, they did.
After deciding on a corner lot and a standard plan, their next order of business was to hire an architect to rearrange those plans to suit their style and needs. Mitch and Dayna’s efforts concentrated on the first floor, where they desired a more cohesive flow. This effect was accomplished by eliminating walls and relocating closets, which allowed them to add two wide, elegant, arched entryways leading from the foyer to the dining room and formal living room.
The Briller’s real vision and break from the norm was realized in the designing of the home’s exterior. Mitch and Dayna preferred a more classic style rather than what characterized most new construction of that time and opted for something with farmhouse appeal, finishing it off with siding and a gorgeous wrap-around porch. Years later, those choices have made the Briller home a welcome standout in a neighborhood of brick-front colonials.
The cozy and casual style of the home’s decor was meticulously planned out by Dayna, who chose a “shabby-chic” motif to elegantly maximize everyday living. But, the most notable design aspect of the interior is Dayna’s obvious affection for chandeliers. From fixtures dangling above in most rooms, to the custom chandelier mounted on a lamp pole in the living room, to the unusual chandelier patterned wallpaper, the Briller’s style is most certainly illuminating.
Family and friends are greeted by the warmth of golden-hued hardwood floors that flow through the two-story foyer. And, of course... chandeliers!
The craftsmanship of the custom molding of the arched entryway is continued in the tray ceiling of the dining room. Here, comfortable upholstered chairs surround an expandable table that can accommodate a large gathering just as easily as a midweek family dinner.
Bringing a bit of California back to New Jersey, Mitch and Dayna took a design cue from their temporary West Coast home and decked out the kitchen floors and counter tops in tile - the only exception being the butcher block top on the floating center island.
An Art Deco inspired, glass block halfwall is the dividing line between the kitchen and the sunken family room. Just one step down and the Brillers are relaxing in the comfort of overstuffed, casual furniture while watching television, enjoying the fireplace, or perusing one of the books taken from the built-in shelves.
Mitch and Dayna’s teen daughter chose the pink and orange color scheme for her own room. When friends visit, they are invited to pick up a brightly-colored marking pen and sign the main and closet doors with a fun message - much like a yearbook or a cast!
For the stairway leading to the finished basement, Dayna chose a wall covering with a repeating chandelier silhouette pattern. To add a three dimensional element to the overall effect, she then searched online and found an actual black chandelier to match!
One would be hard-pressed to find a room in the Briller’s home that did not feature a chandelier, including the first-floor lavatory, with its glossy red fixture as the focal point of this Asian-inspired room.
In the corner of the master bedroom stands a metal, four-post bed with a patina finish. In keeping with the theme, behind the bed, another chandelier hangs from an intricately-molded tray ceiling.
The master bath is anchored by this large vanity that was once an antique piece that the Brillers had customized and fitted with a counter top and two sinks.
