Last year, Joe LaRocca and his partner Paul Montella closed their south shore fi ne-dining restaurant, Nove, and reinvented it as Campania Coal Fired Pizza, a casual artisan pizzeria. The fresh venture has had something special cooking in Eltingville since the minute it re-opened its doors. Recently voted as having the best pizza in the borough by the Advance, borough residents cant get enough of the delicious coal-fi red  pizza, antipasto and sandwiches LaRocca and his staff serve up on a daily basis.

Our concept here centers on being affordable and having a familiar menu with staple Italian dishes done right, LaRocca says. A lot of our recipes are family recipes. We make almost everything from scratch, including fresh mozzarella every day. We serve as fresh a product as possible.

Campanias concept is modeled after its original location in Brooklyn, but the Staten Island location has double the seating capacity. Campania seats 100 patrons at its tables and bar area, where its ambiance artfully mixes the modern and the classic. Crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling, not far from large fl at screen televisions mounted along the brick walls that display the days biggest sporting events. The blending of classical and contemporary dcor creates a comfortable ambiance that appeals to patrons whether they are looking for a night out or a quick bite to eat.

We have the old-world, elegant features, but people can still enjoy a drink and watch television, Joe says. We want to be a casual, social place for the neighborhood. We want you to be comfortable if youre just wearing jeans and a tee shirt, and still serve you great food.

And its that food that has kept borough residents coming back for seconds and thirds. Campanias popular dish, a Margherita Pizza with homemade mozzarella and tomato sauce topped with basil and pecorino cheese, is just the beginning to a menu full of delicious options. Other specialty pizzas, such as the Salsiccia, topped with broccoli rabe, or the Lombarda, garnished with prosciutto, arugula, and truffl e oil, round out the gourmet coal-fi red pizza offerings. Hot and cold sandwiches, along with salads and traditional Italian appetizers complement the menu. Patrons who sit near the open kitchen and coal-fi red oven can watch their food being prepared right in front of them.

Campania also offers catering and private parties at its separate party room next to the restaurant that accommodates 100 patrons. Although Campania rarely offers entres, Joe says they are available on their catering menu, making them a perfect provider for food for your upcoming holiday parties.
