An Eclectic Estate
Traditional Meets Modern, a Dash of Haitian Culture…
and a Little Bit of Brooklyn
As a teenager, in 1979, Hendrick Coriolan moved to New York from his native Haiti, bringing a strong entrepreneurial spirit along with him. In less than 4 years, Hendrick was in business for himself, first importing exotic foreign cars, and eventually establishing a high-line automotive service facility while running an entire fleet of Yellow Cab taxis. As his businesses grew and thrived, so did his family.
The Coriolans lived in a large, comfortable house on the waterfront in the Mill Basin section of Brooklyn, only minutes from Hendrick’s places of business. But knowing first hand the true value of a quality education, Hendrick became less and less satisfied with the choices of schools for his children, and in 2003 he began an extensive search for a new home – one in a desirable, safe community, with a highly regarded school system, but still within a reasonable commuting distance. After months of research, places of consideration had been winnowed down to one choice – Holmdel.
Once the decision was made it didn’t take long to find the perfect house. Nestled on an acre of property on a quiet side street was a custom 5,250-square-foot, six bedroom center hall colonial. This was perfect for the entire clan, and was still close enough for Hendrick’s 6-day a week commute. The 2-year-old house was in pristine, move-in condition, and the Coriolans made it a priority to turn this house into their home. Hendrick wanted to create an environment where the whole family could relax and truly want to spend time. The private backyard was the logical place to start, and so began a complete overhaul of the property and landscaping. Hendrick installed a pool, complete with a waterfall, retaining walls to create a multi-tiered garden, and a covered outdoor kitchen for family entertaining.
A simple, modern style was applied to the interior of the home. Taking design cues from the existing contemporary kitchen, the Coriolans installed hardwood floors, and furnished the living areas with sleek, but comfortable, Mediterranean-style pieces.
In stark contrast to the warm, light, and pleasing hues of the walls and furnishings, splashes of vibrant color were used in the artwork scattered throughout the home. Hendrick is quick to point out his extensive collection of original Haitian paintings, and how it all nicely all ties together the family’s past and present.
Set far behind a rolling green lawn and a circular drive is this symmetrical home that is truly an architectural work of art.
The majority of the artwork that hangs throughout the home is of Haitian origin, and features original pieces by artists who still live and work in the town where Hendrick was born.
Visitors are greeted by a sweeping “Cinderella” double staircase, with gold-leaf, hand-made iron railings. The dramatic two-story granite foyer is enhanced by soaring windows and a dome ceiling with a crystal chandelier.
The newly refinished hardwood floors carry their mirror-like shine into the formal dining room, complete with a flamed, light oak, fine wood table of Czechoslovakian design.
Most mornings the family gathers around the glass-topped table in the breakfast nook to enjoy breakfast, with sunny views of their lush backyard.
Overlooking a sunken family room is a large, custom gourmet kitchen with two islands, granite countertops, and contemporary designed, flamed, fine wood cabinetry.
The spacious master suite has window views of both the front and backyards, and adjoins a handsome master bath with a circular domed ceiling, attached lavatory, and granite surround Aquatic® jetted tub.
This bedroom, belonging to one of Hendrick's two youngest daughters, is separated from the other daughter's room by a shared "Jack and Jill" bathroom.
The Coriolans consider their backyard to be their own private oasis. The marble terrace overlooks the beautifully landscaped property, and the marble staircase leads to the custom East Coast in-ground pool and attached spa.
