The View: The Bereznyaks
05/01/2009
The Bereznyaks Transform a Waterside Colonial into a Mediterranean-Styled Beauty
Boris and Natalie Bereznyak met at a club in New York City and married in 1983. Boris had emigrated from his native Russia in 1980, and settled down in Brooklyn with his new bride. They both decided they wanted to raise a family in a more open environment, so they settled in North Brunswick, New Jersey.
Boris always had an eye for real estate potential, and Rumson became the focus of his search when he realized the beauty of this historic town. He and Natalie also appreciated the terrific school system and the town’s proximity to New York City, which made it a commuter’s delight. The Bereznyak family re-settled in Rumson but they always had an eye for waterfront living. The home they had purchased was not on the water, and when the time was right and just the right opportunity presented itself, Boris used his vision for a purchase that he could transform into his family’s dream home by the water.
This time their destination was a 5,600-square-foot (rather typical) shore colonial, on 1.33 acres of pristine water-view property. Its location is spectacular – on an inlet of the Shrewsbury River. Boris and Natalie began re-imagining their new dream home from the moment they moved in, and Boris began managing the project right from the beginning. He designed a new façade treatment, with a Mediterranean flair, and planned to increase the size of the home to 8,000 square feet, taking full advantage of the majestic water views whenever and wherever possible. The transformation from typical colonial to Mediterranean splendor took just 9 months in total, and nearly caused a familial tsunami in the process. Boris reflected on the challenges of the family living in a home that is undergoing a major transformation and, in retrospect, would not recommend it to others undertaking the same kind of challenge.
The result of the family’s 9-month sacrifice now far outweighs any discomfort that may have been part of the renovation process. Natalie and Boris worked together on the design decisions, while Boris made sure to open the view to the inlet with windows and an open floor plan. The family now enjoys the finished product of a dream realized. The location, design, and quality of construction all combine to create a Rumson jewel that sparkles with style and comfort.

The renovation included exterior upgrades, such as a new blue stone patio, a new boat lift, and a full dock restoration. The premium stucco exterior, Mediterranean windows with green color accents, and new roof lines create a fresh look and character for this elegant waterfront home.

The fully re-designed entryway into the Bereznyak home features polished limestone flooring with bronze accent insets and new mahogany doors. A reconfiguring of the elegantly curved staircase and a dramatic neo-classically inspired mural above add just the right drama to the area. Boris believes in creating drama through design and by using premium quality natural materials whenever possible.

Boris and Natalie believe in an uncluttered approach to interior design, and chose just the right accent pieces and furniture to enhance their home’s new interior flow. The beautiful Oriental rug supplies color, texture, and pattern in elegant contrast to the clean lines of the architectural space. The solid oak flooring was sanded and stained with a medium-tone brown stain in a satin finish. Boris designed an open interior flow, giving the home an “outside in” feel by adding more windows and extra square footage to the rear of house, taking full advantage of every water view possible.
Boris chose dramaticTigerwood exotic flooring for the master bedroom, and kicked out the back of the space to add square footage. French doors lead to a private and dramatic covered balcony sitting area so that Natalie and Boris can enjoy water views in almost any kind of weather.
A relentless commitment to quality construction and streamline design can be found throughout the home, and nowhere is this commitment more apparent than in themaster bath. The couplechosemarble tile flooring and wall treatment, as well as bamboo cabinetry, to contrast the conte
