There's No Place Like Home
11/01/2005 - By Kristin Weston Touring Chris and Steve McGarry's Colts Neck home, LICN discovers rural tranquility and original character.
When Chris and Steve McGarry first came to Colts Neck 11 years ago, they had a vision of what they wanted in their place of residency- warmth, character, and love. It just so happened that those qualities existed in the rural settings of Colts Neck. Chris remembered when she had visited her home for the first time and explained that this particular house was the one and only home that they had looked at. They immediately fell in love with it, knowing immediately that it had all the distinct qualities, character, and solitude one could possibly wish for.
When the McGarrys viewed their future home, which sits on a three-and-a-half acre lot, they immediately fell in love with it. Chris said that afterwards, viewing the inside of the home, the high ceilings and openness of the area drew in design ideas. She explained that she and Steve have a huge collection of cacti- some that are 13 feet high- and indoor plants that she knew would make the house come alive. "This house is one of a kind. A lot of love went into this house and that's what truly makes it what it has become," Chris said,. She explained that before buying their home it had been overgrown with poison ivy and other such things, but was quickly cleared out. The resulting set-up looks almost like a park- birds feed outside of almost every room in the house, the McGarry's four Australian Shepherds have their own little place of residency in their oversized kennels when they are outside, a pond equipped with a de-icer to enable small critters and birds to retrieve warer in the winter, and two chicken coops called the Hencock Inn and Pullet Place, are all arranged outside of the home.
The scenic views that spill out from every direction inside, as well as the kaleidoscope of colors that emerges from a beautifully designed stained glass window in the fireplace room, make this house a unique structure of architecural talent. Other artistically yet casually natural designs surround the 12-room house. The four rooflines alone make this house differ from others in that they are constructed to look like the top of a barn house. Chris and Steve are collectors of miniature art pieces as well as functional art designs that are placed on the walls of the house except when they are being used for such things as flowers or spices.
