Weigh In - “What do you like least or most about Facebook?
08/21/2010 - By Teja Anderson
You can say what you want about Facebook, but the numbers are staggering; over 500 million active users!
It’s the brainchild of Mark Zukerberg. His five-year mission? To explore strange new social networking sites; to help you seek out new friends and reunite with old ones; to boldly go where MySpace and LinkedIn had partially gone before.
You can say what you want about Facebook, but the numbers are staggering; over 500 million active users! Almost every person I asked had a Facebook account - although the adult, and small business owners used it as a form of free advertising not social networking.
But what do its users like least and most about Facebook? It’s no surprise that the number one most positive thing about Facebook is that it keeps us connected to family and friends - and not just those who live in another state or country either. People use Facebook to stay in daily contact with current friends to make plans and check in, feeling that it is easier and faster than emailing or calling, with the added benefit of being able to share photos, websites and daily activities. But, using Facebook as a way to keep tabs on people was seen equally as both a pro and a con.
There was a difference between the sexes. Most women had used it to track down old friends from childhood with positive results but most men were more cautious and felt it had negative effects on their current relationships. While some of you liked playing the games (I myself am addicted to Bejeweled Blitz® and Scrambled®) still more of you disliked the game notifications and requests for help with Farmville® and Mafia Wars® and many of you felt that Facebook use could become obsessive.
Of course, the biggest thing people disliked about Facebook was the lack of privacy. Facebook does have settings to keep unwanted voyeurs or stalkers at bay. Although most of you were aware of this you didn’t use them, even though you were all cognizant that future employers and college admissions offices had full access to your photos and wall posts!
Whether you love it or hate it, Facebook has become a significant part of our lives…
(It was ironic that quite a few of you disliked not having a “dislike” button!)
I don’t like anything about Facebook.
-Sam Henning
![]()
The fact that you can’t have a “dislike” button…
-Matt Sorrentino
![]()
A con is that everyone knows your business!
-Adrienne Ellis
![]()
It’s great for meeting new people but the worst is there is no privacy!
-Brooke Sumner
![]()
I don’t have any problems with it except that they should have a “dislike” button.
-Jeff Brenner![]()
I like being able to stay connected with new and old people you meet like when you go places for the summer and stuff. The worst is when you go on for five minutes and suddenly an hour has gone by!
-Sydney Ringer
The best is keeping in touch with family and friends. The worst is all that Farmville and Zoo/Pet/Mafia Wars invites…whatever that people send you.
-Melissa Ciaglia
I like that you can communicate with friends across the world, like all my friends in Lithuania, and you don’t have to worry about the time difference.
-Zydrune Rudaviciute
Stupid games! I am so sick of Farmville and Mafia Wars…if I get squirted by one more squirt gun or get one more fortune cookie…
-Gary MorrisNo Picture
One of the positives about Facebook is the ability to get the word out about your causes, business opportunites, or events. For self-employed people it is a great way to market your business in a cost efficient manner.
-KMM
I like that it keeps you in touch because I used to live in England and I have a lot of friends there and doing chat or writing on each others walls is still faster than email, but it can get obsessive.
-Eleanor Phipps

The best thing is being able to talk to your friends. The worst thing is people being in your business.
-Sadie AhimovicNo Picture
I love to check my frenemies photos, and get a view into their lives without them knowing. Of course, they have to not have their privacies set correctly for me to do this...LOL!
-Chrissy

A con is that everyone knows your business. A pro is that it’s an easy way to keep in touch with friends in other schools.
-Sheri Havrance
I hate when people pretend to know you and “friend” you and then proceed to get weird and crazy. The best is that you never have to call your friends; you just post what you are up to or where you are going.
-Faith Yascone

The best part is being able to stay in touch with people you’ve known your entire life, the worst part is that it’s so addicting you stay on way too long.
-Emilie Tardiff![]()
I almost deleted my account but it’s really great for staying in touch with my cousins in England.
-Brynne DevlinNo Picture
Stalker ex-girlfriends!
-Jeff Heller

Best stalking tool since binoculars... ;-p !
-Jeremy M.![]()
The best part is that you can see other people’s conversations and see what they are saying about you.
-Jessica CaputiNo Picture
Supporting local businesses and learning about great events happening in my area. That is definitely the best part of Facebook.
-Jonathon Duckard![]()
It keeps you connected to people you would otherwise lose touch with but there is really no privacy.
-Kim Karstadt
The worse thing is having to pay for some of the games like “Wild Ones”. It really should be free to play.
-Joe Borrero
The cons are that you waste a lot of time on there; it’s addictive. But it really is a great way to stay connected.
-Angie Hrissafinis![]()
The worst thing is that if you are in a relationship it can really cause some damage, but it’s great for finding friends from grammar school.
-Kyle Eichin
The best part of Facebook is the games; the worst is when people post stupid stuff about you on your wall.
-Olga McIntyre![]()
What I like the most is staying connected, but what I don’t like is all the people who aren’t your friends that can find you.
-Tim AanensenNo Picture
It’s turned into a very juvenile place. I’m 47 and maybe at one time it was OK for college graduates, but it’s become a site for highschool kids. Enough with the snowball fights and being “friended” by the boss...I left months ago.
-Yuri M.
The best is connecting with old friends from 30 years ago. My 18 year old son made me get a Facebook account and I didn’t want to, but now I am glad I did!
-Holly Blenden![]()
I like the privacy settings; you can stop people from seeing your stuff. I used it to find my best friend from junior year in high school, which was a wonderful thing. Now we talk all the time!
- Leslie Graham![]()
You can find people from your past like even from elementary school. I even found family members I didn’t know I had. Plus, it’s a lot easier than emailing. A big negative is that people post photos of themselves all drunk or passed out.
-Agnes Kikta![]()
It’s great for talking to your friends; the worst is when people send you stupid stuff like Farmville…
-Angela Kelly![]()
I like staying in touch with my friends but I don’t like that people can know too much about you.
-Carmine Marino![]()
Making friends is what I like most.
-Wilson Valdivieso![]()
The thing I don’t like is that the customer service is terrible; there is no number to call for questions or help and there really isn’t any privacy either.
-Linda Robinson![]()
I don’t like getting so many notifications but I love seeing all my friends on there and staying in touch.
-Jenna Marino![]()
The best is when you have nothing to do you can go there and find something, but the worst is everyone can see what you are doing.
-Lisa Mass![]()
The games are the best! The worst is that some people can be strange and request you as a friend when they don’t even know you.
-Brooke Rongo![]()
I can see what my friends are up to that go to different schools, but I don’t like how addicting it can be...
-Taylor Baker
I don’t like it when people update their status every five minutes.
-John Edler![]()
We are actually about to get a Facebook account for the store because it is a great way for small, local business to stay in touch with customers.
-Joan Fabiano
![]()
It is not good because there is no privacy and future employers and/or colleges can get negative references from looking you up.
-Tori Slinger![]()
I love keeping in contact with old friends and I’m getting married so I love the countdown app they have on there. I don’t like how they changed it so now kids under 18 can join.
-Jenna MayoNo Picture
Nobody wants to know about your daily updates nor your daily life. It’s a sense of stalking Socializing and exposing your information with people whom you do not know, isn’t a good idea. People should start making REAL friends in REAL life.
-Jay Martinez![]()
I love how I can connect with people all over the world but I don’t like some of the bullying that goes on there because you can’t avoid it.
-Harrison BakerNo Picture
Facebook does not respect people’s privacy and by default makes information about you publicly visible, some of which you can’t hide!
-Chloe Stevensen![]()
For me I have to say that the computer itself can take you away from everyday life too much but, it’s great for looking up and locating someone from your past.
-Catherine Hunter![]()
I like it because I can keep in touch with my friends and family back in the Philippines and see photos of their weddings and babies and they can see what’s going on in my life as well. I hate the annoying people from high school trying to “friend” you!
-Arlett Buzeta![]()
The worst thing about Facebook is that my sister takes it upon herself to post every compromising, horrible, embarrassing photo of me she can find - like in a red bikini bathing suit when I was 5!
-Johnny Hillebrandt![]()
I have a band, “Christina Signorile and The Fever” and Facebook is a great way to get more people to listen to my music.
-Christina Signorile![]()
The worst is that people you don’t want to see your stuff can and the best is meeting new people. Also, you can check out blind dates before hand!
-Robert Fitzpatrick![]()
The pros are that it is free advertising for small businesses, we can post our menus, specials, stuff like that and it’s free…
-Gail Doherty & Tiffany Betts![]()
Being able to keep in touch with friends, like right now my friend is in Paris and I don’t have to call because we keep in touch on Facebook. But it’s the worst for ex-girlfriends!
-Shawn Warren![]()
The worst is that everyone knows everything about you; there is no privacy. The best is that you can stay in touch with old college and high school buddies.
-Kim Murphy![]()
I like all the people interaction!
-Patrick Morris
Being able to chat with friends at all hours of the night is great when you can’t sleep!
-Jason Bryan![]()
I just got a Facebook account yesterday! I am looking forward to being on with friends in all the different states.
-Jasmine Hoagland![]()
It’s a relationship killer; stalking!
-Mike Watters![]()
It consumes people’s lives too much!
-Jen Gribbin![]()
For me, I like staying in touch with friends and their activities but I don’t like the game posters and the relationship problems that get created through Facebook.
-Natalia Di Donato![]()
It’s great that you can keep in touch with people. I found second cousins on Facebook in England and that was really cool!
-Sinead Dunne
I dislike that you can get tagged in photos where you don’t look good; it’s an unflattering photo and if you don’t check it you could be on there for a few days and not know.
- Augusta Norton![]()
I like to talk to friends up late, but sometimes it’s bad because you really don’t know who you are talking to because people can hack your friends account so it really isn’t them you are talking to.
-Jordan Bryan![]()
The best thing is keeping in touch with family and friends all over the world. The worst is the ex-boyfriend stalkers and that colleges can look at your photos.
-Ozlem Kalender![]()
I like being able to reconnect with people you might never have spoken to again but the lack of boundaries some people have with their personal information is really bad…
-J-9 & Nicole![]()
I don’t like Facebook because it breaks up friendships and future employers can see what you put on there; people are way too open about their lives.
-Gillian Penn![]()
It’s a good way to reach out to friends but Farmville is addicting.
-Alan Placer![]()
The best part is finding people who you haven’t seen in years but the worst is that things people write can be taken out of context…
-Anthony Savage
