Weigh In - What’s the one food item you would never eat?

Weigh In - What’s the one food item you would never eat?

How we are hard-wired to like or dislike foods is probably not all that different from why some men prefer blondes over brunettes, or why someone is a cat person and not a dog lover. We just are.

Chatting with shoppers at Starbucks in The Grove in Shrewsbury revealed a lot of similarity in the answers to this  question. Liver is one of the most common foods people love to hate. Responses to not liking liver were very emphatic! Quite a few people had seafood allergies, so an easy out for them. Others had rather obscure responses, such as snake,  grubs and eel. I can’t imagine anyone has to choose among those food (?) items as entrees on restaurant menus in  Monmouth County. Some, mostly men, had aversions to green vegetables, or really any kind of vegetables. Can you  imagine them as little boys being told by their mothers to “eat their vegetables?” Ha, now they’re all grown up and they  don’t have to!

Without delving into the science of taste receptors or the psychological connections between childhood and food, it’s  fair to say that people’s likes or dislikes are very definite, very deep seated. But when asked why someone doesn’t like a  certain food, most responded “I don’t know. I just don’t.” How we are hard-wired to like or dislike foods is probably not  all that different from why some men prefer blondes over brunettes, or why someone is a cat person and not a dog lover.  We just are. Fortunately, we live in an area with a wealth of food diversity, from humongous supermarkets and boutique  specialty markets to restaurants of every possible flavor. There’s something for everyone. But, I want to get voted off the  island if my only food alternative is ever snake, grubs or eel!

Kumquats. I’ve never had one but I don’t even like the sound of the name.

-Irene Grieco

Middletown

Brussel sprouts. People in the Midwest put them in Manhattans. My kids say you’ll never find anything green on Dad’s plate.

-Mike Malone

Allenwood

Coconut. I just don’t like it. You could put it on anything and I wouldn’t eat it.

-Ellen DePinto

Middletown

Pork chops. I’d eat any other kind of pork, but pork chops are just too tough.

-Tom DaMico

Manalapan

Ketchup. I just hate it. I hate the way it looks and I don’t like it, ever since I was a kid.

-Kelsey Wood

Rumson
Okra. I’ve never had it but it’s nasty, runny stuff. I wouldn’t eat that.

-Rick Haywood

Toms River

Lisa: Mushrooms. I just don’t like them. They taste like dirt. Anthony: Caviar. I just don’t like the whole idea of eating fish  eggs. Not good.

-Lisa and Anthony Masso

Belford

Easy for me; I’m vegetarian. This has been my preference since Thanksgiving when I was seven.

-Jackie Hugg

Colts Neck

Any domesticated meats. I prefer to eat all vegetables and tofu and soy products just because of all the hormones and chemicals that are in meat. I try to  avoid chemicals and fat.

-Jay Reynolds

Atlantic Highlands

McDonalds. I try to just eat healthy foods.

-Paige Tactikos

Liver and onions. I’ve never actually eaten it but I just can’t get past the texture and the way it looks.

-Jerry Mennona

Brick

Liver. I judge it by the way it looks. The texture looks creepy. I wouldn’t even give it a try.

-Nicole DeSimone

Colts Neck

The one thing I won’t eat is bananas. I just don’t like them.

-Jack Brignola

Oceanport

Crab cakes. I don’t like seafood and it’s the perfect way to ruin a cake.

-Emily DeNegro

Rumson

 Rocky Mountain oysters.

-John Waklais

Little Silver

Fried chicken. It’s too greasy and not good for you. There are so many delicious alternatives.

-Kate Burns

Holmdel

There are a lot of foods I wouldn’t eat. Peas, guacamole...weird colored foods.

-Kevin Lang

Colts Neck

Fish. I’m allergic. Otherwise I pretty much eat everything. I’m not picky.

-Rebecca Riker

Marlboro

Eel. It’s fishy and slimy. I did taste it once though, at my girlfriend’s on Christmas Eve.

-Leona Cohen

West End

Indian food. I don’t like the taste of the spices.

-Mark Schlesinger

Middletown

Unfortunately, I do not like salmon and I know I should because it’s healthy. I don’t like the color or the texture.

-Carol Herrmann

Little Silver

Snake meat.
