What finishes a room?

Whatever your design style there are key components that are necessary to finish that almost complete room.  It is typically the hardest part of the project which is why, those spaces are almost finished.  Drapery, area rugs, accessories  all need to be implemented to call a space complete.  I often refer to these components as the eye candy for a space. Sometimes it is just one piece of incredible art, or a fabulous area rug, or window treatment.  Using these elements can  fill the bill for completing a project.

Many rooms will be finished over time because we evolve as individuals and so do our styles.  Many of us travel and we usually do a bit of buying while we are traveling. Whether it is art, a piece of beautiful glass, an antique piece of  furniture, something personal to you, using a designer can be a benefit in pulling it all together.

Color, the size of the object, and placement are the key elements when you are accessorizing a room.  In minimalist design, using a pop of color in the objects that are placed in the space will achieve a finished look.  In traditional design it  is all about the layering of pieces.  This is a bit more complicated, and more of an investment.

When working on a project that has more of a minimalist feel, the interest is usually implemented with color and subject matter.  An area rug for example can be very prominent in the scheme of the design, along with artwork.  There  usually aren’t a lot of accessories in this type of design, that being said, the objects that are used are very precise.

When working on a project that has more of a traditional feel, the objects are always multi layered and windows become much more important to the completion of the project.  This type of design will often use window treatments that  are more opulent using silks, velvets, and trims.  They also are the softening factor for this type of décor and a design professional should always be used to select the style of drapery along with the fabrics and trims.

When implementing the accessories in more traditional design both symmetrical placement and asymmetrical placement are appropriate.  If you have many objects that are the same in style for example, they should be placed together.   They will tell their own story if they are with each other.  Same holds true with placement of art on the walls in that space.  Subject matter becomes a main focus.

In closing always make sure when choosing accessories for your home, you feel passionate about those accessories.  Our homes are our sanctuaries and we should make our homes comfortable for us.
