Take It to the Next Level

Wine traditionally does not live in a vacuum; it exists simultaneously and was developed at the same time as the food and culture of its region. Given the multitude of cultures around the world, this should get you excited about the numerous wine styles you have at your disposal. But, never overlook the most obvious treat as you explore the wine world, travel! It is one of life's great joys to taste various wines and discover the options that are out there. Take it to the next lever and visit the places that produce your favorite wines. Touch the soil in which the vines grow. Taste the food of the region and discover the commonalities. Meet the people making the wine and find the soul of the region.

Let's look first at the example of Muscadet from the Loire Valley in France. The wines of Muscadet are enjoyed the world over, but many have not heard of their charms. Many who have discovered them marvel at at their easy ability to pair with various foods, and after a while many fine that oysters make possibly the perfect pairing. Would it surprise you to learn that the soils in which Muscadets are grown were formed millennia ago when the region was a sea bed populated by... you guessed it, oysters! The bed of the Loire River is covered to this day with oysters that are enjoyed with Muscadet all season. The wines are immediately and obviously appealing, but only when you visit the Loire and drink its wines with the locals and what they're eating will the complete picture emerge.

This experience can be reproduced thousands of times in thousands of locales. Let's say that you want to learn about Chianti so you visit Tuscany. Meet the modernist producers and their traditionalist friends and see how each fits into the unique puzzle that each of the world's wine regions possesses.

One final inducement? People who make good wine are generally as obsessed about what they eat... How about a food vacation?

Sincerely,
Scott Reiner
